How lame would it be to name a child after a favorite movie or TV character or the actor or actress who plays them?

I have thought a bit about doing this, but I just don't love the names enough to use them or I do like them a lot but they are just too popular.  Some examples of names from characters or real life people I have considered: Addison (from both Grey's Anatomy / Private Practice and Moonlighting), Montgomery (from Grey's Anatomy / Private Practice), Kate (for Kate Walsh), Bree (from Desperate Housewives), Angela (from Who's The Boss?).  I also really like the name Violet which happens to be a character on Private Practice, but I didn't start liking the name because of the character.

Do you have any names you like because of a character or actor?

There are names I was introduced to more openly in TV/movies/music that I really like.

Addison, George, Isabelle from Grey's Anatomy
Stephen from Colbert Report
Seamus, Phineas, Oliver (actor who played Fred), George, Fredrick from Harry Potter

i don't think it's lame, honestly. people like the names they like for certain reasons. just because you heard it on tv & liked it doesn't make it any worse than someone who randomly hears a name & likes it. people name children after books all the time, so hey, why not tv & movies?

i like the name Montgomery, too. though, i knew a kid when i was like 14/15 whose middle name was that, his name was Jason Montgomery.

hmmm... as for names i like because of a character or actor- Luke, Dylan (Luke Perry played Dylan on Beverly Hills 90210), Felicity (Felicity), Noel (Felicity), Vince (Vince Vaughn, Entourage).

I don't think it's a problem at all. I mean, if you like the name go for it. It doesn't matter how you were introduced to the name, does it?

Gregory - House
Samuel - Life on Mars
Addison - Grey's Anatomy
James - Harry Potter
Anderson - after Anderson Cooper
David - after David Tennent

I do that all the time! :D

Personally I don't think it's lame or unusual if it's not obvious that it came from a certain show. For example, nobody would bat an eyelash if you name your son Jack, even if you named him after Jack Bauer. Nobody even has to know.

If you're a Trek fan on the other hand, and decide you love the name B'Elanna, or Odo, or god forbid, Spock... yeah, your kids would hate you.

Luckily for me, most of the characters I really like (including Jack Bauer) have the kind of traditional names that look good on business cards.

It's not lame in the least. TV/movie characters are just literary characters, no different from those in books or poems or folk heroes or whatever, which people have been using as inspiration for their children for years. It's exactly the same thing. The quality of certain TV shows has been academically, critically, popularly etc. claimed to be exactly as good as other literary genres. I don't think there's any shame in it whatsoever.

I've got several of my names from tv shows, like Gillian from Gillian Anderson on The X-Files, or Stephen after Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell (and [Steven] Morrissey and Stevie Jackson, but they're musicians).

Mmm of course!

In a perfect world I would have twins named Meriadoc and Peregrin!

Jokes, jokes. But I love their nicknames! [Merry and Pippin.]

Galadriel
Eowyn
Arwen
Elendil
Elessar
Theoden

I have always loved the name George owing to the Beatles connotations...but Grey's Anatomy and Harry Potter both reaffirmed it for me.

TV characters usually aren't the only people with the names, so if it's a favourite name, it's ok.

When people start naming after TV characters it's a little odd (unless they really just like the name).

One name I can't stand (love the show, though!) is Lorelei/Lorelai/Rory... I hate thinking there are a bunch of little girls aged 0-4 running around with that horrid name! One girl I went to school with had a little girl before we finished school and was almost called Lorelai... Thankfully they decided on Ava instead.

(And for the record, Rory will always be a boys name in my book)

As long as you aren't naming your kid Mr. Burns, I think it is ok.

Keep in mind that the name you choose might end up very popular because a lot of trends start due to TV shows. (case in point: Aiden and Lorelai)

I don't think its lame. There are so many other connections that could be made with particular names, too. A lot of the names added to my lists in the last couple of years have been because of book or movie characters, and even a few actors, but that wouldn't stop me from using them.

I think it depends on the name. If you name your child Lorelei, it's likely to be associated with Gilmore Girls, but only for now, it's not a huge deal, but if you name your kid Shaft or Spiderman, then that association is kind of there permanently :).
