Took a call from a woman yesterday who spelled her name "Sasha" but pronounced "Say-sha."

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS?!@!$ I worked with a guy a few years ago who spelled his name "Michael" but insisted it was supposed to be "Mih-KELL." I wonder if the parents are the ones who initiated that pronunciation or whether the person started doing that later in life to be more distinctive or whatever.

Either way, it's annoying.

See, that I understand. But this dude was definitely American, as were his parents, so he had no excuse other than the fact that he wanted to be a little flashier, I think (he was veryvery flamboyant and such).

One of my closest friends is named "Say-sha," but it's spelled Sacia. Her sister's name is Cerissa. I've actually always liked their names (although she's determined to name her daughter Ciara, pronounced like "Sierra," and I'm not such a fan of that).

Yeah, when she said "Say-sha" I was all set to spell it that way (Sacia). Is Cerissa "Sah-rissa" or "Kah-rissa"?

Not such a fan of Sierra either, although Ciara is a bit easier on the eyes.

I think the spelling of "Ciara" bugs me because I knew a girl in Ireland whose name was spelled that way and pronounced "Kee-ra" (plus it just seems like she's going for an "original spelling," and that always bugs me). I'm not sure if that's how the name is usually pronounced in Ireland, but it just seems more right to me because of that association.

Haha I think that Ciara is supposed to be pronounced Keera, like Ciaran is pronounced Keeran. It seems more right to me too.

Maybe it's indeed an ethnic thing. For example, if someone saw the name Michael written down somewhere, and wasn't familiar with it, (s)he could assume it was supposed to be pronounced 'Mih-KELL'.
Michael is a bad example, since it's such a common name, but you know what I mean =)

Well... her last name was straight-up German before she got married, so I dunno. You may be on the right track with the ethnic pain in the ass idea, though. ;)

....so her dad probably was German. Says nothing about if her dad was 100% German, or if her mom had French in her. I look Irish, my last name is Irish, but I'm literally a mutt with five different nationalities in me, but nobody would ever know. Most people get my last name wrong cos they say it the "American" way, not the Irish way.

If it's not an ethical thing, tho, yeah, I can see how the "mispronuctation" might be annoying.

This makes a lot of sense. In Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium 'Diane' would be pronounced either Dee-ahn or Dee-ahn-eh. So that really isn't strange at all.

Ummm, Lay-a IS the original Hebrew pronunciation. I actually hate Lee-ah and see it as a mispronunciation of a beautiful name. I think that if you want a kid named Lee-a, then you should spell it Lia, darnit! :-p

I went to school with a girl named Brittiney, which she insisted had the MIDDLE syllable emphasized. She told us if it were supposed to be pronounced like "Brittany", it would have been spelled like it. But pronounced it lik Brittany anyway, because it was the last annoying straw of a very annoying personality.

This is a little different but when I was a kid one of the girls in my class at school was named Lise (Lease) and one day she decided that there was an accent on the e in her name.

So we started calling her Lees-ai and she got really mad. She insisted that the accent didn't make the name sound different, it was just there. But we called her Lees-ai until she stopped insisting that there was an accent in her name.

But then again she was the kind of kid who would show up at school with her arm tucked in her sweatshirt and try to convince everyone that she had a broken arm.
