I've been saying for awhile now that my favourite boy's name is Lachlan/Lachlin because I love the nn Lachi (Lock-ee) and if I named a kid Lachlan they would definitely go by Lachi all the time. I'm honestly not even that crazy about the name Lachlan. I just love Lachi.

I also like the name Malachi and I just realized that it has 'lachi' in it.

So: Lachi as a nn for Malachi?
Do you guys think it works? Have you heard it before?

how do you pronounce Malachi?

I'm assuming that you're going with 'Malachy' instead of actually going with 'Malachi.'

Malachy is pronounced 'mal-uh-kee' while Malachi is 'mal-uh-kai.'

Different names, different pronounciations. And if you really would want to use 'Lachi' I'd go with Lachlan because a Malachy would probably prefer 'Mal.'

Most Bobs, Micks, Bills, Lizzies, Harrys (etc) seem to cope with the idea that nicknames don't sound quite the same as the full name...

Lachlan here is not pronounced with a 'lock', short or long form - it's 'lack'. So Lachi to me says 'lackey', which is not a nickname I'd want to give a child. But I like Lachlan anyway.

I have a friend named Lachlan who gets called Lachi [Lock-ee] by most people.

If you're pronouncing it two different ways, then I don't think it could work.
I really like Malachi (nn Makai). If you like just the sound of Lachi, why not go with Locke as a regular name?

Also, I don't see anything wrong with Lachi being a nickname for Malachi [given the different pronunciations].

If Harry can be a nickname for Henry, or Jack for John...then Lachi can be a nickname for Malachi.

It is what a nickname is meant to be in my mind - a shorter name derived from the original one.

Plus I think it's real cute =]

It's doable, I suppose. I like Mira (meer-ah) for Miranda (Muh-ran-dah). I guess I think a nickname can be derived from a spelling as well as a pronunciation.

Also, I think as names go, Malachi is vastly preferable to Lachlan.

To be honest, Harry and Jack go back to medieval times, where English diminuatives were different (as was the English used). Lachi, however, does not and shouldn't be used for Malachi.

i think its fine, as a lot of others have said, it doesnt need to be exactly the same sound. there are plenty of nicknames that dont really "go" with the full name. while not my style at all, i like both lachlan and malachi, and am wavering back and forth as to which is the better name.

I prefer Malachi to Lachlan. I think the nn works for both.

haha, I agree with yah there...

Plus I think their nn will end up being Kai or however people spell it.

Lachi= Lockey? Lachlan makes me think of McLachlan, a road right near my home.

ah, i say it like Mal-uh-kai, so the Lachi (lock-ee) nickname doesn't really make sense to me... if it was said like Mal-uh-key, then Lachi would be really cute.

I think the nickname works for Malachi, because the "lock" part is still part of the name. Kinda like how Danny is a nickname for Daniel, the "y" just comes in to make it more cutesy I guess.
