Out of interest, list your top five boy and girl names (so, 10 in total) and write the rank for 2006 next to it. You can comment (or not) if having popular names or not is a priority and plays a big part in the choice of your names

A useful site (as always)

Popularity has nothing to do with the names I like. If I like a name...I like it for itself not because it is popular or not.

Here are my top 10

Boys
1) Ryan - 14
2) Sean - 68
3) Tadhg - not in the top 1,000
4) William - 10
5) David - 13

Girls
1) Peyton - 138
2) Thea - no in the top 1,000
3) Taylor - 22
4) Isobel - not in top 1,000
5) Grace - 17

If I like a name, I'm not going to let it's popularity stop me. I like names for the meanings, not for their trendiness.

Anyway, not too surprised about the boy names, but the girl names, I am a little.

Boys:
1) Aiden - #1
2) Canaan - not in top 100
3) Hudson - not in top 100
4) Harrison - not in top 100
5) Adrien - #53

Girls:
1) Kate - not in top 100 (I am surprised)
2) Lily - #39
3) Ariel - not in top 100
4) Ashton - not in top 100 for girls
5) Natasha - not in top 100

Juliet: #581

Casey: #308 (#411 for girls which surprised me..I thought it would be higher for girls)

Girls:
Maeve: #645
April: #319
Ariel: #471 for boys, for girls it has only the variant Arielle on #587
Sadie: #157
Leah: #69

Boys:
Otis: Not in the top 1000
Roman: #209
Adam: #64
Jack: #35
Logan: #19

Interesting. My boy's names (except for Otis) are all ranked pretty high in the top 1000, whereas my girl's names aren't (except for Leah).
I don't really care if a name is popular, as long as it doesn't get into the top 5 =)

Where did you get your numbers from?? lol. I'm just wondering because Ariel is listed as 202 for girls on the Social Security website (it is 471 for boys, though).

I like Arielle much better, btw, but pronounced Are-ee-elle.

Popularity doesn't factor into me liking a name...however it might play a part in whether or not I used it. Depending on how much I really love the name I guess.

1. Annie -
2. Claire [It is unfortunate when your own name is one of your favourites!]
3. Helen
4. Heidi
5. Rain[e]

I'd love two little girls named Annie Claire and Heidi Rain/Raine

I'm also smitten with the name Blue since someone mentioned it here as one of their guilty pleasure names.

1. Jade [Major GP name at the moment]
2. Michael
3. George
4. Marley/Finley [Can't decide on this one - some people seem to want to use these for girls...but I love them both on boys. Especially Marley.]
5. Connor/Oliver - trend issues with these names

That site doesn't work for me...so I don't know the ranks of these names.

In random order, because I can never decide which name I like better than the other :(

August(us): #618 (831)
Frank: #245
Kenneth: #128
Anders: #987 (though I would never use this name unless I emigrate ... it means 'different' in my native language).
Robinson: n/a

Mathilda: n/a
Johanna: #376
Claire: #86
Lucy: #152
Tünde: n/a

And just for fun, I checked the top 250 list for my country. None of the names are in it, except for Johanna, at #67.

I don't care much about popularity. As long as I like the name.

http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi -- I used that site, since it's the Social Security Administration's site, and more accurate.

Amelia - 82
Lilliana - 445
Claudia - 339
Madeline - 71/Madeleine - 337
Juliana - 162

Ironically, popularity doesn't really effect the way I feel about a name. I don't want my child to be one of 6 ____ in their class but there are several uber popular names on my list - like Aidan, Isabelle, Ava, James, Joshua, etc...

i definitely thought more of mine would be in the top 100 (max, luca, ruby), but glad they arent. popularity definitely doesnt affect my liking the name, but it does affect whether or not i will use them. for many years, hannah was my favorite girls name and i was dead set on using it as my first girls name, and its still a favorite now, but i hear it absolutely everywhere now and as a result, i really dont think i will actually use it, which makes me a little sad.

i don't care about popularity in choosing a name. most name's i've had chosen for some time now... does it irritate me that some of the names i've loved for years are now so trendy it's sickening? yes. but i don't think it'll have much affect on my names.

I don't personally care about the popularity of a name. I like a name because I like it. I don't care if everyone on earth has the same name, or if everyone hates it. I was actually kinda surprised to find Finley and Phoenix on the list as girl names. Finley is 886 and Phoenix is 423 on the boy list as well.

Popularity of a name doesn't phase me. If it's popular, fine; If it's not popular, that's fine, too.

Victoria - #80
Bridget - not on list
Lily - #39
Isabel - #11 (Didn't realize it had gotten that popular, oh well, I'm not having kids...I'd had for her to be one of a dozen Isabels, though)
Annabelle - #66 (Seriously? Catherine, another fave of mine, isn't on the list, but Annabelle is?)

Graden - not on list
Liam - #52 (I thought this one was more popular...)
Brennan - not on list
Jude - not on list
Stephen - not on list

A lot of my "top" names aren't names I particularly like, but they have meaning, so popularity doesn't matter to me that much. Isabel, the only extremely popular name of mine, is a name I've loved for so long, the current popularity doesn't make me like it that much less.

Going by the SSA website rankings...
