One of the comments in another post made me curious about this, so I made a poll. I'd appreciate it if you'd all fill it out - it's only two questions long. :)
I think Liam is DEFINITELY it's own name; it works as a nickname, too, but Liam has always been a standalone name. Jack is more of a recent standalone, but it has still become one. I like it both as a nickname for John, and as a name by itself.
The idea of parents giving Jack as a full name makes me very uneasy. Liam is full enough to stand on its own without being a nickname, though it's a good one for William, but Jack...it doesn't sound serious enough.
Personally, I really like the idea of giving a child a name that gives them the option of nicknames. Liam is a really nice name, but I think that it doesn't really have any nickname options.
No, Liam is a variant of William. It's also used as a nickname for William, but that's like saying that John is ONLY a nickname for Jonathon. It's both a nickname AND a standalone name.
I like Liam both as its own name and a nickname for William. However, I only like Jack as a nickname for Jackson. (Not as its own name or a nickname for John.)
No, it isn't. For one, John and Jonathan are completely unrelated names, John isn't a variant of Jonathan, or the other way around. The nickname for Jonathan is Jon. Liam, however, comes from William. It's a nickname for William.
I only answered the first question, as I don't really like the name Jack. Liam is good as a standalone name; however, I like it better as a nn for William.
I hate Jack as a nickname for John. It makes NO sense. They are nothing alike, and I don't see how you can get Jack from John/Johnathon. To me, that would be like naming your child Matthew and then calling him Billy. One has nothing to do with the other...
I can't see Liam as a nickname for William, because I pronounce Liam and the -liam part of William differently, so the two don't seem related. Then to be completely hypocritical, I can totally accept Jack as a nickname for John and it doesn't seem odd to me. Probably because it's my dad's name and he goes by Jack and John equally.
I like the name Liam, but I like it as a nn for William too =) I like both names Jack and John, and I know (as someone pointed out) that it's normal to name your kid John and then call him Jack, but I think it's crazy. They are two totally different names! If you don't feel good about naming him 'just' Jack, you could always call him Jackson ;)
Completely off-topic, but I always find myself listening to that song at this time of year. Something about the tone matches the falling leaves for me.
