Which do you prefer, Maud or Maude?

Do you think the name is too "old womanish"? It's a name I've always loved,  but have always been told that it's too old-sounding. Recently I'm starting to like the idea of the name for my (soon-to-be here) little girl -- the previous post reminded me of it -- ... but I've never found a middle name that I think goes well with it. Any suggestions?

i love maude. maud is neat too though honestly it's one of the "alternate spellings" that don't nauseate me.

I prefer Maude, as the spelling just looks more feminine.

I hate that "aw" sound, especially between the m and the muted d. It actually reminds me of someone without gums opening their mouth, and I don't know if it's because it's "old womanish" because I generally don't discriminate against names for being of that era

Maude Alexandra
Maude Nicolette
Maude Christiane
Maude Isadora

I think something longer sounds good, and maybe leaning toward more feminine?

I've never seen Maude before, but I know of Maude. Queen Maud of Norway. =) I used the name once in a school essay.

I dislike it because it's Ned Flanders' wife :P
Maybe it's just me, but I tend to pronounce them in a different way:
Maude as 'mode' and Maud as 'maw-d'. I've also never seen the latter spelling.

I like Mauve, like the color :)

I like it.

You're right about middle names, though. Maybe use Maude as the middle name, and still call her by it? (That's a tradition in my husband's family, and I've known several other people who do the same thing.)

Maude. I think it is rather old-fashioned sounding, but I like that in a name. A few of my favorites (Eleanor, Harriet, Louisa) have the same old-ladyish feel to them, but they're also cute on a little kid, so I still plan to use them. I think Maude would be adorable:)

My sister's middle name is Maude and she loves it very much. I think she wishes it was her first name (instead of Melody). She uses it on everything.

I prefer Maud because of Lucy Maud Montgomery but Maude is more feminine-looking.

I personally love the name. The guy who directed the movie "Knocked Up" (Judd Apatow) has a daughter named Maude.

I don't really like it, but I don't like most old-fashioned names. If you use it, pair it with a modern middle name like Kristin.

I really dislike the name. It is extremely old womanish to me. If I had to use it I'd spell it Maude - but really not a fan.

I don't like it, but it's not old fashioned to me at all.
I like Maud better than Maude though. It always makes me want to pronounce the 'e'.

I read a book where Maude cheated on her really wonderful boyfriend, so I really hate that name.

Maude looks better, though.
