really? I have belonged to this community for over a year and don't recall seeing this question posted? I supposed I might have overlooked it once or twice if it was part of a larger post, but I don't think it has been posted numerous times.
yeah, my friend Sara used to be called that a lot for being skinny (with the exception that Olive Oil is Olivia in the italian version of Popeye). She didn't like it at all.
It's funny because I've never liked Olivia, but Olive sounds to me much more accessible. I think I'm biased by the movie Little Miss Sunshine. That kid rocks! I wouldn't use either, but I'd name the girl Olivia, because it's more formal, then call her Olive, and not just for short.
My friend's name is Olivia and she always jokes that she was named after her Grandmother who was named Olive...but her Grandmother had changed her name to something else as soon as she turned 18! So she's named after her Grandmother..who apparently disliked her name enough to change it.
These are actually the two names I am most debating with if we are having a girl. I love both... but Olivia has become much too popular these past few years. I picked out the name a little over a decade ago, when it was virtually unheard of.

We used to call my sister Olive Oil because she had such skinny legs.

Date: 2007-10-19 10:29 am (UTC)Olive just reminds me way too much of actual olives. I like olives, but to me it seems strange to actually call your kid that.

Olivia is overused and a little stuck up sounding imo.
