I was just thinking about nicknames...because it seems an issue with a lot of people what their child might be nicknamed if they give him/her a particular name.
So - what is your nickname? Is it derived from your first name, or your middle name? Or maybe your last name?
Or is it unrelated?
Do you like it? Did you choose it, or did your parents, or your friends?
Since my name is Claire, I've never had a nickname. To me a nickname really ought to be a shorter name that is just quicker, easier and less formal used among friends. And my name can't really be shortened....
My parents called me Flossy when I was growing up though, no idea where that originated!

Date: 2007-10-15 03:38 am (UTC)My mum calls me Meggie. A few of my teachers call me Meg (as well as a few of my friends). My dad calls me Megster. I also get called Meg-han, too.
Sometimes someone from my old gifted class will call me Hang Me since it's an anagram of our name.
I've also been called PotterPuff because of my HP obsession and Lady Bug.

Date: 2007-10-14 05:04 am (UTC)My nicknames are Jenn, Jenni, Jenn Pen, and Penners. All derived from my first name. I love my middle name though, sometimes I wish I'd use that sometimes as a first. It's Neva.

Date: 2007-10-14 05:11 am (UTC)I don't mind any of my nicknames, but they're all pretty assigned to people. So, it makes me feel like I have a different identity around my different groups. However, most of the time I'm just Lindsey/Linds. I think everyone, aside from my best friend, calls me that generally.

Date: 2007-10-14 06:43 am (UTC)My name is Ainsley, and I usually get called Ains. A lot of people don't shorten it though, which I like. My grandfather and brother call me Ainsley Jade, and I get a lot of A.J. from my family.
My sister Teagan has a fun nickname. When she was little, Dad decided she, basically, a little pipsqueak so we call her Squeak. I hardly ever call her Teagan, and when we watch her play Hockey she gets a bit embarrased by her family yelling out "GO SQUEAKY!" on the sidelines :D It suits her though.
Sometimes when I'm talking about my family, I'll say "and my sister Squeak", resulting in a few odd looks from people.

Date: 2007-10-14 07:39 am (UTC)And every now and then someone realises that 'Claire' rhymes with an awful lot of words and start making up poems/songs about me. You know, "Claire, she has long hair and sits in a chair and eats a pear"... =P might be funny if I hadn't heard it a zillion times.

Date: 2007-10-14 09:05 am (UTC)I never had a family nickname and my parents don't actually call me anything but Samantha. When I started sports as a little kid, though, I became 'Sam.' I didn't play sports for more than a few years but it's stuck with me.
It's what I introduce myself as, write on papers and sign my name as and everything. Everyone knows me as Sam and I'm fine with that. I'm in a very small school at my university and for a while I was the only Samantha so I was just 'Sam.' Every other Samantha that we've gotten so far has been Samantha instead of Sam. It's how my professors distinguish between me and the others, lol.
I was never Sammy though I have been Sparkles and Wiremess to a couple groups of people.

Date: 2007-10-14 10:39 am (UTC)My daughters are Amy and Brianna. I thought you couldn't do much with Amy but she gets Aims or Aimster. Brianna gets everything. I call her Nan. Or Nanny May (her middle name). But others call her Bree, Breezy, Breeza. Mind you Aussies are just notorious for nicknames.

Date: 2007-10-14 01:43 pm (UTC)My brother calls me Lin, which is okay.
My friends call me Linds, which is what I prefer.
My parents call me Binz(er) which annoys the crap out of me. That also derives from my name.
I get called Shirley by relatives on my mom's side because my aunt's former sister-in-law (who spends every holiday/event with us) is named Lynne and it gets confusing. So Shirley I am.
And I get called Scout by my high school English teacher, after the character from To Kill a Mockingbird because apparently I am her.

Date: 2007-10-14 02:04 pm (UTC)I am called Ellie by close friends and El by those in a hurry. Also Elle, L, LE, E, Easy E, Big E, and sometimes people who don't actually know me very well call me Ellen (which is not my name). I got Ellie-ah-nor for a while. In writing people frequently spell "Ellie" as "Eli" which is a different name altogether and would be said "EE-lye". But whatever.
My family has called me various derivatives like: Nori, Nori-Tory-Poppycock (I'm not kidding), EG (initials), Eggie.
Once a kid tried to start calling me Lennie, which I think is horribly ugly.
