Nicknames

I was just thinking about nicknames...because it seems an issue with a lot of people what their child might be nicknamed if they give him/her a particular name.

So - what is your nickname? Is it derived from your first name, or your middle name? Or maybe your last name?
Or is it unrelated?
Do you like it? Did you choose it, or did your parents, or your friends?

Since my name is Claire, I've never had a nickname. To me a nickname really ought to be a shorter name that is just quicker, easier and less formal used among friends. And my name can't really be shortened....

My parents called me Flossy when I was growing up though, no idea where that originated!

Wow. That's just scary.

My mum calls me Meggie. A few of my teachers call me Meg (as well as a few of my friends). My dad calls me Megster. I also get called Meg-han, too.

Sometimes someone from my old gifted class will call me Hang Me since it's an anagram of our name.

I've also been called PotterPuff because of my HP obsession and Lady Bug.

My parents and family called me Beth because my names Elizabeth. But friends always called me Lizz, which I prefer. Then my uncle had a daughter named Elizabeth... And family started calling me Beth so they wouldn't confuse us. Ugh...

My name is Jennifer.

My nicknames are Jenn, Jenni, Jenn Pen, and Penners. All derived from my first name. I love my middle name though, sometimes I wish I'd use that sometimes as a first. It's Neva.

My name is Lindsey. I get Linds/z most often. My grandma calls me Lindsey-Windsey. My best friend calls me Lindzus/Lindzuses (Her name is Katherine/Kati and I call her Katums/Katumses.) Unrelated nicknames, my boyfriend calls me Boogle/Boogs/Boog (part of my AIM name and I've actually known him long enough for him to know the story behind it.)

I don't mind any of my nicknames, but they're all pretty assigned to people. So, it makes me feel like I have a different identity around my different groups. However, most of the time I'm just Lindsey/Linds. I think everyone, aside from my best friend, calls me that generally.

Same here. I'm a Lindsey called Linds, but I don't really consider that a nickname so much as an abbreviation. I knew a guy once who called me Lin. He was trying to be cute and it did nothing for me.

My name is Kathryn, and I get Katie/Kate/Katrina from my parents. My friends call me Kat or variants of that (Kitty, Kit-Kat, Kitty-Kat, and Kittens, the latter as a joke). I also get Sweetpea, Kiddo, and occasionally Sparky or Bubbles from various family members, though I don't remember either came from.

I'm Taylee, my family and friends usually just call me Tay but I have others. Tayter, Potayto, Tayter-tot. I really only get called Taylee by those who meet me and when people are mad at me for one reason or another. :)

How funny! My family calls me Flossy too! I think it is more of an endearing term though, as opposed to a nickname.

My name is Ainsley, and I usually get called Ains. A lot of people don't shorten it though, which I like. My grandfather and brother call me Ainsley Jade, and I get a lot of A.J. from my family.

My sister Teagan has a fun nickname. When she was little, Dad decided she, basically, a little pipsqueak so we call her Squeak. I hardly ever call her Teagan, and when we watch her play Hockey she gets a bit embarrased by her family yelling out "GO SQUEAKY!" on the sidelines :D It suits her though.
Sometimes when I'm talking about my family, I'll say "and my sister Squeak", resulting in a few odd looks from people.

Lizzybella (Lots of people)
Maggie (NAU)
It goes on...

My name is Melanie, and I usually get Mel. My mom had this idea when I was little that she would call me Lani (pronounced law-knee), but I hated it.

My name is Claire too. I'm usually called that, but some of my friends have their own random names for me, including Clairey, Claire bear, Claribell and Clarisse. Also, some people call me by my surname.

And every now and then someone realises that 'Claire' rhymes with an awful lot of words and start making up poems/songs about me. You know, "Claire, she has long hair and sits in a chair and eats a pear"... =P might be funny if I hadn't heard it a zillion times.

My name is Alyssa and I am generally just called Alyssa. I figure since I didn't talk in school until I was 10, it was just too late to start changing my name to something else. I do have nicknames though. My parents and brother call me Lys and Lyssa (my sister only calls me Alyssa though). My former therapist would call me Alyss. One of my co-workers / friends calls me Lyssa sometimes. My best friend Boob and Fool. I don't know where Fool came from, but Boob started in high school when I told someone they were a boob and my friends and sister thought it was so ridiculous that I am forever known as Boob. My parents also call me Girly-Girl, I don't know where that one came from, it's been my nickname since I was a baby.

My name is Samantha.

I never had a family nickname and my parents don't actually call me anything but Samantha. When I started sports as a little kid, though, I became 'Sam.' I didn't play sports for more than a few years but it's stuck with me.

It's what I introduce myself as, write on papers and sign my name as and everything. Everyone knows me as Sam and I'm fine with that. I'm in a very small school at my university and for a while I was the only Samantha so I was just 'Sam.' Every other Samantha that we've gotten so far has been Samantha instead of Sam. It's how my professors distinguish between me and the others, lol.

I was never Sammy though I have been Sparkles and Wiremess to a couple groups of people.

My name is Caroline and I pretty much just get Caro or Caz (which I hate!)
My daughters are Amy and Brianna. I thought you couldn't do much with Amy but she gets Aims or Aimster. Brianna gets everything. I call her Nan. Or Nanny May (her middle name). But others call her Bree, Breezy, Breeza. Mind you Aussies are just notorious for nicknames.

Ha, Australians and our nicknames... I don't know a single person who's never had a nickname.

I'm Amelia, and I get Meals, Mealie, Meals on Wheels, Mealie-May, Males, Melia, and (just from one person) Mimi.

My name is Lysanne, which is what most people call me. Nicknames I've been called are Lysan, Lys/Lies, and sometimes my aunt calls me Lysje/Liesje. When I was younger my mom would sometimes use Lysantje Crossantje. Most of my friends who are also on LJ call me Appel (from my username obv). I wish people would call me by my last name though, lol.

My name is Kirsty, and I detest it when people shorten my name to Kirst (it sounds like cursed) but it's difficult to stop it. My friends call me K or Lips (type Kirsty into predictive text and it comes up with Lipsty, hence Lips). I like nicknames, they usually originate because people like you!

Oh, also lots of people mishear my name as Kristy, so some friends call me that as they know it annoys me. My family call me Krusty Loaf, from Kirsty and the fact that I'm a redhead. My husband calls me Pie or Beam, though neither are from my name.

My name's Molly so I usually get Moll and Moll-Doll from my parents. My sister calls me Mol Mol. My Aunts call me Moll-Donian and Moll-Doon. One of my best friends is also named Molly so to differentiate, our other best friend calls me L (and the other one O) because of our last names.

My nn's completely unrelated to my name. For as long as I can remember my family's called me "Bean" as in "Janine Bean" or "Janine Janine the Jellybean" It wasn't until recently that my dad told me that everybody called me Bean because when I was little "Janine" just seemed like a mouthful for a little girl.

janine janine the jellybean is cute! that reminds me of an uncle that used to call me "traci jeanne the mean machine". actually, he would change the adjective to fit any situation, but it was alway the "something" machine.

My name is Lindsay.
My brother calls me Lin, which is okay.
My friends call me Linds, which is what I prefer.
My parents call me Binz(er) which annoys the crap out of me. That also derives from my name.
I get called Shirley by relatives on my mom's side because my aunt's former sister-in-law (who spends every holiday/event with us) is named Lynne and it gets confusing. So Shirley I am.
And I get called Scout by my high school English teacher, after the character from To Kill a Mockingbird because apparently I am her.

My name is (obviously) Eleanor Grace.
I am called Ellie by close friends and El by those in a hurry. Also Elle, L, LE, E, Easy E, Big E, and sometimes people who don't actually know me very well call me Ellen (which is not my name). I got Ellie-ah-nor for a while. In writing people frequently spell "Ellie" as "Eli" which is a different name altogether and would be said "EE-lye". But whatever.
My family has called me various derivatives like: Nori, Nori-Tory-Poppycock (I'm not kidding), EG (initials), Eggie.
Once a kid tried to start calling me Lennie, which I think is horribly ugly.
