My friend's chosen a name if she has a girl. She would be named Melissa Emily and nn Emmy.

My b/f and I have fallen in love with the name Amelie (AH meh lee).

Would it be too close to what she chose?

It would be Amelie Harper LaPierre unless we changed the middle name.

Edit: I have been corrected on accents!

Amelie (with the accent) is not pronounced AH meh lee. It would be pronounced AH may lee. e with the accent (accent aigu) is pronounced AY, not EH.

Amelie, the French name, is not given an accent in writing. That's a fairly important point and you should probably research it before you name your child that.

That said, no, I don't think Amelie is too close to a girl named Melissa Emily.

I just looked and indeed it is often spelled with the accent.

I'm not sure which one is more usually used in France as a name, but Amelie is pronounced very differently with and without the accent. Maybe it's both, as a name? Either way, if you're going to use it, I'd make sure your pronunciation matched the spelling.

I prefer it without the accent, but I hated that movie so much, I really have a bad association with the name in general.

Nothing, thanks.

I didn't like the character. I thought she was a high-maintenance drama queen. I liked it even less that that was supposed to be adorable.

I enjoyed the movie more than not...although it really lagged in some places...but I found it pretty amusing that it was apparently supposed to be endearing that she snooped and interfered in other people's lives. Acquaintances can stay the hell out of my business (not to mention my apartment).

Maybe the one who wrote down the pronunciation read the accent wrong: è would be pronounced 'eh' and é 'ay'. With Amelie, it's definitely the latter.
I don't think it's too close to what your friend picked. It's somewhat similar, but it's a completely different name IMO.

I like it even better with 'ay' =)
I guess it depends on what you are used to. Accents are pretty common in most parts of Europe.

No. It shouldn't matter, anyway it's not like she's actually got a daughter called that anyway.
I just don't get the 'name her one thing but she'll go by her middle name' deal..
Amélie Harper LaPierre is beautiful :-)

That's a really pretty name! I like it pronounced the way you like it.

I don't think it's too close at all. It's her baby's middle name and your's first name, so I don't see it being an issue. And Amelie is adorable!
