Here is a funny little story. I was talking to my mom about the desire these days to name your child something unique that will set your child apart. She said that when she was growing up, it just wasn't so. (This was 50s-60s) She said that there were tons of Mikes and Kathys, but it really didn't matter. Maybe it was a challenge for the teacher, but it was actually how kids formed friendships sometimes - like all the Susans would be friends. My mom said that she always felt left out because no one else had her name. Her closest friend in school was the only other girl with an unusual name.

And interestingly enough, the kids who have the unique names tend not to be that unique now anyway...
Evvvvveryone wants to be unique!

How many times can one name be made 'unique'!?

Madelyn / Madyline / Maddylyn
Kaytlyn / Caitlyn / Caytlin
Jayden / Kaidyn / Aiden / Braden

Just writing that irritated me!

How sad, isn't it? It's quite depressing. I just say that if you honestly like the name, it's alright.

But really, the world has enough Stephanies and Nicks and Brittanies. How about a Jahzara or a Zuko or a Natasha for a change?

No. Jahzara and Zuko are awful. Natasha is alright, but a nickname for Natalia, no?

There are not enough Stephanies and Nicks and Brittanies anymore. There are too many Madisons and other crap names.

There are plenty of beautiful, classic and LEGIT names that are perfectly "unique". A Mary would be the only one in her class these days, ditto (most likely) for Stephanie or Brittany. Nicholas is a lovely name and popularity doesn't ruin a classic and good name.

How sad, isn't it? It's quite depressing what the naming world is coming to.

There are two in my freshman class, and a few more in the high school. Nevermind that I don't like the name to begin with. So...yeah... -_-

I go to private school. I see them all- I have two friends named Madelyn (line), there are Nicholases all abound, Samantha, Danny, and Conrad are all on the popular scale, complete with the exotic Amina (pronounced AUM-na, for the record), Neha (nay-HAU), and Raja (RAU-juh). There is hardly anything I haven't come across, trust.

I just like names that people will actually stop and say "WOW. I love your name; it's beautiful and unique." Stephanie and Brittany and Nicholas are too ordinary for my tastes.

Though I admit I like Mary. It's pretty, used on the right girl. John, too, but the kid must have one heck of a last name. I know a Ben Smith, so you see my issue with traditional names. *nods*

One of my best friends is a Mary. She hates it, she thinks it's old fashioned and embarassing.
She'd rather be an Ashley.

I'm with your mom. I'm only eighteen, but even when I was little I felt different (not in a positive way) and kind of left out because no one else had my name (and my name isn't THAT unusual). I always wanted to be named something like Jennifer or Lauren or Lindsay or something else more popular/common instead.

(I did, though, go through a kree8yv phase when I was in middle school - I think my favorite names were Lauryn and Lyndsie. Thankfully, I grew out of that.)

In my year at school there are about 6 James [Jameses?], and literally 7 or 8 Sarahs.

I have always loved my name because nobody else had it. I graduated in a high school class of over 1,000 kids and I was the only one with my name. That always made me feel a little bit like Madonna or Cher! lol People didn't need to use my last name because there wasn't another person to get confused with. :)

I have never met anyone with my name either and it doesn't bother me at all.

It's interesting though, I'd think that in the 60's a whole bunch of original names would appear thanks to the hippies. But then again, not everyone was a hippie in the 60's =)

My name's not 'unique' but I can honestly say, to my memory, I have never met another Kate.
Loads of Katie's, yes, but no Kate's!
