Why are there FAR more females posting to naming forums? Both the name hobbyists and the actually expecting parents tend to be girls/women around here. Every once in awhile a expecting father will post something, but it's rare.

Why aren't men interested in names?

I honestly don't think (Well, my boyfriend sure doesn't) realize the impact a person's name can have. His name is Preston and he hates it because its so uncommon. He used to go by his middle name, James, or PJ.

EVERY name I suggested for our son he disliked because it sounded too "out there" for him.

Or he liked names I hated, like "Loren". Or really plain names I've seen a million times.

I even tried to convince him how great of a feeling it would be to have a name that not too many other kids had, he still didn't understand. Oh, well.

My boyfriend was completely fine giving our son a plain name. We even picked a some-what ordinary name yet his guy friends still think its "weird".

my husband is very interested in naming babies though-he's got a little list and everything-the sad part is that only a very few of the names are on both his and my list! hehe

I think it just depends on the guy, I'm very interested in the names my wife and I are going to use for our children. We discussed them together and agreed on them.

Urm..I posted a huge entry a few days ago. Most guys are probably under the assumption that the girl is the one incharge of all that since she's carrying the baby.

I really love my girl, and I agreed with her on the names we picked.

To be honest, I don't think guys take the names seriously enough, or sometimes they're so stubborn that they can't think outside of their own name pool.

My husband came up with his own shortlists when I was pregnant, although they were a lot shorter than my lists! He chose the middle name we wound up using. I think he took it quite seriously, although he didn't have a lot of imagination - not so much stubborn but just blithely unaware that there are 'weirder' names out there IYSWIM. He was pretty receptive to the less common names I threw out for discussion: although we did wind up choosing two 'Biblical' names, one of them is far less common than the other and wasn't one he initially knew.

Heh. I don't like to actually give them out, I'm afraid, but you're welcome to try working them out. They both have associations with angels; the less common one is from the Apocrypha (which is why my husband didn't know it, incidentally). Both have been used in English for centuries, but the less common one was more popular 3-400 years ago than today.

i dunno, but when my husband and i talk about future children, he only says he doesn't like names i throw out, but doesn't really contribute. it's highly frustrating...and i'm not even pregnant!

It's not so much the naming process that scares away guys, it's the design of most baby naming boards and websites. Heck, I'm just a tomboy and the pastels and pink and "cutesy" design of most naming boards disgusts me.3

As for this community, guys seem to be less common on LJ, and more using LJs for actual purposes - writing, technical stuff, etc - when they do have them, and so less likely to join communities like this.

well i personally have hada thing for names since i was 12 or 13 when i got my first baby name book. for the purpose of naming characters in my stories. then i went from there... i love names

My SO is very into the names we've been talking about for our baby.
Since we don't live together he doesn't know of the LJ stuff I do and even when we lived w/ my mom before and we had a computer he wasn't really into the internet like I was.

My SO is so very intent on using family names, that whole macho thing about keeping the family line strong... He doesnt really have much time for 'arty farty' names that i like.
