Zetta - I've always loved this name. I love the combination of Zetta Rose. However when I looked it up, I discovered that Zetta actually means rose! [It's Portuguese]
Zona - Zoh-Na [Perhaps Zoe for a nickname, but I'm not a huge fan of nicknames anyway]


Also - I saw the name Megan / Meaghan mentioned earlier, and I wondered how people pronounce this.
I know 2 girls with this name, one with each of the above spellings. And they both pronounce their names Mee-Gen [Like the word 'Me']
How do you pronounce this name?

1. I would not recommend naming a child Zona, since "Zonah" means whore in Hebrew.


2. I pronounce all spellings of that name May-gen.

Zona, however, means 'Sash', 'Belt' or 'girdle' [the name of the stars that make up Orion's Belt']. I'm not too worried about Hebrew connotations anyhow, it is fairly irrelevant to me.

I have noticed that a lot of people care about a far off translation or meaning of a name...is this perhaps something you worry about more in other countries than here.

hahaha that's interesting! I'd say it goes with US's American-centered mentality, not to worry about other possible meanings in a different language :P I don't mean that as offensive, it's just that it's a rather large country, with few confining countries, so it would make sense that a name should be interpretable only within your own culture. Whereas, if you take Europe, for example, each nation confines with many different others, that speak different languages, so there's more cultural exchange, I guess.
That's just my 2 cents, anyway :)

I just prn it the same as Helen without an e. For some reason I have just always liked it with an e better.

But I like Helena prn Hel-een-a or Hel-ay-na too.

I pronounce Megan like...Megan. Short "e" sound so the first syllable rhymes with leg. That's how all the Megans I know pronounce it here (in the UK).

I pronounce Megan (and all variations thereof) as MEHG-an. However, I have a friend named Meghan who is Canadian, and she and her mother assert that Megan should be pronounced MEE-gan and Meghan as MEHG-an. It makes sense to me, as Regan is REE-gan, but most Megans are MEHG-ans, so I pronounce it that way.

My name is Megan and I pronounce it May-gen. My neighbour's wife's name is the same and she pronounces it ME-gen and it annoys me. A kid in my class used to call me MA-gin but it didn't bother me..it's close to the original.

Growing up I knew an older guy named Jade and I thought that was cool. His brother's name was Riel and I was very impressed with them.

I don't like names that start with Z. I don't know why..I never have. Actually that's not true..I went through a Zephyr faze when I was like 14. haha

I went to school with a boy named Jade. Nobody really said anything about his name being feminine. His sister was Jenna. George is on my like-but-would-never-use list and Monroe is a surname I could handle as a middle name.

I have met ONE Mee-gen in my life (spelled Meghan) and the rest were all Meg (as in peg or leg) Anne.

In Australia Megan and its variations are pronounced Mee-gan (I actually have a friend called Meegan!).

I much prefer it pronounced Meg-an and I think the only way you could get people to pronounce it that way here would be to spell it Meghan - which is why I like that spelling.
