I  have a new teacher, and today we were talking about her first name... it's just plain Annie. Her parents thought she was going to be a boy, and when she was born, it was like, SUPRISE! and they couldn't decide on a name together -- her mom wanted Ann, her father wanted Anna. So they came up with Annie.

WDYT? I personally hate names that are usually considered nicknames (like Charlie for Charles, Maddie for Madeline, etc), but Annie is growing on me. I think it fits her personality really well. She's exactly what I would imagine an Annie to be.

ETA: Irony...  she was born on the same day and year the movie "Annie" came out, which I think influenced her parent's decision. It's pretty funny that her hair has a reddish tint to it, too.

I too dislike nn given as proper names, but for some reason Annie seems like a seperate name. I've know a few Annies where that was their given name, also Anns and Annas who NEVER went by Annie as nn. Personally I really like it. Sounds friendly.

I consider Annie a stand-alone name...

My mother's name is Ananda, but everyone calls her Annie, and I think it really works as a stand-alone name.

Out of Anne, Anna and Annie my favourite is Anna, by far.

My sister's name is Annie, and it always has been. My parents didn't find out the sex, and it was always Annie or Harry (Harrison). Never Anne.

And my sister has red hair too.
Even funnier, my brother's name is Oliver. (Totally accidental.) People keep saying I should have been named Evita.

I love Annie and I plan to use it one day.
I've never thought of it as a nickname.

I've never considered Annie a nn. I know lots of Annies. I even know an Anie, which I think is a little much.

I can't really comment, seeing as my sister Kathy is indeed just a Kathy, not a Katherine or a Kathleen. It's certainly worked for her, and it suits her, and I can't really see her as a Kathleen, so YMMV on the nicknames as proper names practice.

A good friend of mine passed away this May and she loved to be called Annie. Since her first name was really Annjeanine, I decided to incorporate it into my baby's name, which will be:

Anneliese Ariane-Jeanine

I think we will end up calling her Annie somtimes though, and that's what I wanted.

Annie has always been one of my favorites. I always thought it to be a stand alone type of name.
