I've always considered it as a girl's name. When I see it I automatically think girl. As for nn I guess the obvious Kels or Kel.

It's my name. I consider it a girl or boy name and have heard it on both genders.

Nicknams I've had in regards to my name: Kels (I hate the nickname "Kel"), Kelsaroo, Kesley, and Smellsey Kelsey which morphed into Smellsey which morphed into Smells. (These weren't malicious, but were from my friend Luke, who I called "Lukey Pukey" or "Lucas Mucus")
