[identity profile] requiem-morrow.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Yes...I am too lazy to make separate posts:)

I. I want to name a daughter after my grandma, Helen. I much prefer Helena (He-LAY-na). However, my brother in law goes by Lane (John Delaney) and I have recently discovered he is not the man we thought he was and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the similarity in name, especially since Lane appears to be the nn of choice for Helena. i do like Helena pn Helen-ah, but not as much.

Am I over reacting or is it too close?

II. I met a girl named Franchester.

Franchester!

III. I am looking for first name suggestions to go with Wiley has a mn. John, Johnathan, Riley, Brian, Douglas, Kenneth, Logan, Alex, Allan, Ray, Arthur, Larry, Eric, Jason, Elliott, Connor, Lucas, Asher, Joshua, and Liam are out as they are family names...well...and Riley Wiley would just be funny.

1. My grandmother is Helena - heh-LENN-uh. I like Hellen as a possibility for a future child. I don't see Lane and Helena being close really at all. I think it's nitpicky to think they're close. And "don't allow" the nickname Lane for Helena if you don't like it. I think that's really ruining the name Helena, even though I love the name Lane. I don't like the pronunciations hell-AY-nuh or HELL-ih-nuh. I just like the way my grandmother pronounces it - heh-LENN-uh.

2. Wow. Ew.

I really like the name Helena, and I have never heard of the nn Lane for it, only Lena. I think since you are honoring your grandma the focus will be on that (and the new baby) and your BIL's vaugely similar nn will not be an issue.

Does Franchester go by Fran?

First names for Wiley:

1. As Solagirl said, I think the focu will be on the fact that the baby is honouring your grandma, not the similarities towards your brother-in-law. Also, just don't allow people to call her Lane!

2. Was it not Francesca? [I think thats how you spell it!]

1. If you love the name Helena, just go for it! After all, she will be named after your grandma, not your brother =) Only reconsider it if the similarity with Lane is really starting to bother you.
2. Franchester? Huh? =P 'Let's call her Fran!' 'But I love Manchester!' *idea* 'Franchester!'
3. Jefferson Wiley? Conrad Wiley? Cameron Wiley? Roman Wiley? Frank Wiley? I don't know what kinds of names you like =) You could also try nymbler.com! =)

If you want you can use it as a middle name instead, but I don't see how it would be a problem to have her named Helena. You don't have to call her Lane either. Or how about a similar name like Elena?

For some reason I like Matthew with Wiley or reversed it sounds good too.

I. Why not use the nick Lena instead?

II. Wow.

III. Riley Wiley made me laugh, so not a good name. What about Michael or Thomas?

1. Don't use 'Lane' or 'Laney' for a nn, but don't let this bad guy ruin a name you want to use.

2. Ew.

3. Oscar Wiley. Joke.

My great-great-grandmother's name was Helena, and everyone pronounced it 'heh-LEE-nuh', so that's a possibility.

Or you could just use Helen as a middle name.

I like Helena better. I wouldn't worry about the nickname. Just call her Lainey. Still close but not exactly the same. Franchester is just weird.
