[identity profile] pythianlegume7.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Every Tuesday I tutor at an inner city elementary school, and some of the kids have really...interesting names. These kids are preschool to third grade, by the way.

Kiah (the "Ki" is pronounced like the beginning of Kyle. I would like it better spelled Kaia)
Sasha
Darquis (hard "qu", pronounced Darkees)
Antonio
Tevawn* (Pronoucned Tey-Vaun)
Jalynn (male, prn. Jay-LYNN)
Annaliyah (I admit, I think this is really pretty)
Taylor (f.)
Isis
Brandon
Rashad*
Kordell
Racinda*
Michael "MJ" (I think the J is for Junior, his father is called Michael too)

*= I'm not sure about the spelling, there could be random apostrophes or intercapitalizations in a lot of these.

Kiah is cute when you pronounce it, but i would also like it better as Kaia or Kaya.
Annaliyah is another one that i like to say, but it looks too much all spelled out, imo.
i like the name Rashad... i think i like it mostly because it means "good judgment" lol
Isis, again i like... but i wouldn't use it.

i don't like Kordell or Racinda, at all.

I had a friend in high school named "Ky" but it was spelled Kai, I believe it's Hawaiian. I like it, but my husband has never been a fan.

I love that name! It means ocean in Hawaiian and I believe in Japanese as well? Only spelled Kai, though. No Ky.

Tevawn reminds me of a girl i knew whose son was named Trey-Vaughn. i would've liked it more spelled like Trevaun or something. the hyphen made it too long.

I knew someone called Annalia...I like that better than Annaliyah, but it's pronounced the same =)

I had a friend in school whose name was Jennifer Lynn, and we used to call her Jailynn sometimes. I'm constantly surprised to see it's a name actually being given to children.

And I call people by initials all the time, so I've had a couple of friends named "MJ" (a Matthew Joseph and a Maureen Jeanette). I think those particular initials sound cute.

I really like Kiah, but not the spelling. I prefer Kaia as well. And I love the name Isis.
