So, I'm taking a class on medieval Spanish culture, and we just recently learned about the last Visigothic king of Spain, Rodrigo. In English, his name is generally anglicized as Roderick, though, and I seem to have fallen in love with that name.

Thoughts? It has a kind of romantic, knight-in-shining-armor feel to it, but I'm not sure how it would work on a small child. It doesn't really lend itself to nicknames aside from Rod, which I hate (and I feel would be a horrible nickname for a teenage boy), and Rick, which I like but am not overjoyed about.

Also - what do y'all think about the middle name Brien? O'Brien is a family name, and I've thought that it would be nice to pass that on in some manner, but it might be a pain considering that Brien is generally spelled (at least in the US) as Brian or Bryan. :/

i think Roderick is okay, reminds me of the tennis player Andy Roddick lol... i know they are two different names, i guess the sounds just remind me of one another.

i think it's perfectly acceptable to spell it Brien, especially if it's a family name.

Perhaps Derry? For the 'Der' sound there in the middle. It might be a bit of a stretch but I never mind nicknames with a bit of an explaination.

On Brien, I get that it's a family name and knowning the story helps. But if that name were to be listed on this forum as having been read off a list of new arrivals, I can't help but think that most of us would criticize the parents's kre8tyv way of spelling Brian.

Roderick is OK. Not my favourite. But it's not the worst name I've ever heard.
I never had liked the name Bryan/Brian/Brien. Just one of those names you just don't like for no apparent reason.

I don't like Roderick. I feel it's such an elite name. A cocky, annoying guy immediately comes to mind =S

I don't think that's a crisis though. You and your family know it has more significance than that, and that's what actually makes a difference. So someone you've never met thinks you misspelled Brien. Whatever. You didn't. Ha.

Roderick is kind of cute. I think Roderick Brien is a nice combo.

I like Roderick, and I think it would be cool for a son as long as you don't mind him being called Rod.

Why not just go with O'Brien if that's the family name?

I love Roderick! And the fact it has the 'knight-in-shining-armor feel to it'!
& I like Brien. As someone esle said, strangers might think you've spelt Brian wrong, but you know, and your family know you haven't, and imo, thats all that matters!
