[identity profile] the-good-ship.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Inspired by kitchen_poet's post on whether anyone thought Atticus would be the "next Aiden," or not; I thought it would be a good idea for a thread on what people do think will be the next:

Super popular girl's name? - eg. Madison(Madysen/Maddysin/Madisyne/etc./etc.), Addison(Addysen/Adysyne/etc./etc.), Olivia, Grace, Isabella, Sophia, Ava, and Emily.

Super popular boy's name? - eg. Aiden(Brayden/Cayden/Hayden/etc./etc.), Jack, Hunter, Ryan, Tristan, Parker, Tyler, Austin, Dylan and Mason.

Is Tristan a super popular name in the States? It is my brother's name, and I've probably only met two or three other Tristans in my 22 years. I don't see it too much in the birth announcements either. This is Australia though, so a different popularity may reign supreme!

In honesty though I think the super popular girl's names (Olivia, Grace, Isabella, Sophia and Ava in particular) will stay super popular for a long time. They're classic, pretty names.

I think Tristan was kind of five years ago.

Tristan isn't THAT popular. My older son is named Tristan and we've run into one little girl with that name in the 4.5 years he's been around.

A little girl named Tristan? THAT'S definately different. I'd never think to use it on a girl...

I do know someone who wants to use that name if they ever have a boy, though.

I thought it was kind of odd too... but there was a little baby girl who was a few months younger than my son in the preschool I used to teach music at named Tristan.

My mom and dad tried swearing up and down that Tristan was a girl's name when I told them what I was naming my son. They told me they only knew of girls being named Tristan(more like they'd heard of 1 girl being named Tristan). I politely informed them that since the name came from Arthurian myth and it was the name of a knight that I'm sure it's masculine enough to name a boy by that name:P I also informed them that the name they chose for me, Lindsay, has long been a boys name.

I am firm believer that Tristan is a boy's name.
Specifically because of that very knight you speak of :)
I've met girls named TristEn, but I still think it's a boy name regardless of the spelling.

Sometimes I hate the whole unisex names, they get confusing. Especially since if you come to associate it with one gender, regardless of what it started out as, you find it odd when there is a person of the opposite gender with that name.

I had a roommate (a girl) named Kevyn, and her sister was named Tristan. So, there's another one.

Ashlyn is going to be the next super popular girls name. I know of one Ashlyn who is about 4 or 5, now, and two who were born in the past month.

Hmmm...for boys I think it will be a return to the classical: Jack, Henry, Harry, Simon, Nick, Guy, etc. Plus more of the biblical trend that is going on now---Elijah, Isaiah, etc.

For girls I am placing my bets on "cute" names like Riley/Kylie/Mylie, etc. Oh, and Ella. I am betting there will be a LOT more Ellas. (Bellas, Ellies, Avas etc.)

And I am starting to worry variations of place names like Paris or Brooklyn will be big for both genders.

(Ha, and of course I am hoping the trends will avoid all of literature based names--like Atticus---but I doubt it.)

This was a good post! :]

but didn't Charlotte end up naming her daughter Ruby? I think someone posted a link to it a few days ago. (not to say that she didn't once say she wanted to use Ava :)

and I agree about Ava. but not just Ava, Ava Elizabeth. Reese Witherspoon's 7? 8? year old is named that and about 90% of the Ava's I've heard of have that as their middle name too.

Hmm I guess for boys: Noah, James (was it ever not popular, though?), I think Jacob will stay popular, Jonas/Jonah, Alexander

For girls: Hannah (it's in the top ten already, I think, so that's maybe not a good guess), maybe Rylie I could see. I think cutsie, nick-namey ones, like others have said. This game is hard.

Addison.

Unless it's already there...

And, DAMMIT, I wanted Jack to not get popular!

How about Jane? I think that needs to make a major comeback. Classy, sexy, simple.

I've been sort of out of the loop as far as local naming goes but generally speaking:

Ella is def on the upward trend toward #1, Savannah seems to be becoming more popular than usual and definitely Ava (even though it's up there already) and I seem to be hearing Ruby a lot lately (I mentioned one example in another comment). not to be so vague but almost any name (particularly ending in "n") that is a boy name is definitely a contender.

Jack is def up there for boys and I agree with whomever said that biblical boys names like Elijah and Jonah are getting popular (or staying in the case of Jacob/Caleb). and place names seem to be becoming the new hunting ground for boys names. as well as anything surnamey.
