Favorite place names?

Last night I noticed a 2 yr old girl named Bostyn Tatum, and I got to thinking about just how popular place names are! India, Asia, Brooklyn, Ireland, Paris...the list goes on. So what do you guys think about place names? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Favorites? Is it better or worse to change the spelling? City named better than country names or does it matter?

I kind of like Bostyn. NMS really, but I think it's cute for someone else. Overall, I don't mind place names. Some can be kind of crazy like really creative spellings of Cheyenne, but Austin is kind of a classic and Savannah has been around for a while.

The only one I like is India. I just love the way it looks and sounds. But I would never use it, because I really don't like using place names as given names. I have no connection with India. Most of these people naming their kids Dallas or Ireland or whatever have no connection with the places, they just think they sound cool.

I like the more traditional place names: Savannah, Carolina, Virginia, Georgia.

Not so into the newer ones like Dakota, Brooklyn and Cheyenne, but the traditional ones were new at one point too, so... :P

Savannah drives me nuts because around here, most of the people naming their kid Savannah are naming her that because that's where they honeymooned and conceived the kid. Not my style.

I think it's a cute name, it has grown on me (after watching the series, I admit lol), it's only too close to 'savana', like the prairies with lions and zebras and that!

If someone MUST use a place name, I wish they'd spell it right. Bostyn looks horrendous. Boston is bad enough.

My best friend is convinced she is going to have a daughter and name her Irelyn, which I like. I definitely don't like Bostyn though.

If you're going to use a place name, spell it correctly, at least. The misspelling aggravates me, but then again, I strongly dislike UNEEK spellings across the board.

I like Ireland, but given my love for the country, I wouldn't use it. I'm against naming a child for your hobby, like a friend who told her husband that they would not use Hunter as a name, as he's an avid deer hunter.

I often like place names that have been around awhile. But of course, places have generally been named after people, so most place names have 'been around awhile', but you know what I mean. I'm not a big fan of country names. I like and might use names like Georgia, Savannah, Virginia. Some names like London and Paris are cute, but I don't like most of the more recently popular city names.


Of the names you listed.. India is pretty but odd, Asia I don't like, Brooklyn is just tacky IMO, never heard of someone being named Ireland, and Paris is okay.

Generally don't like. Mainly because the people who DO name their kids place names have absolutely no connection to these places, and just do it because it's trendy.

Especially when they spell it "uneekly".

I think country names are worst than city/state names though, because if indeed these people don't have any connection to the country in question, then I think it can come across kind of rude to all the people who are from there and have a national identity built around it.

I don't mind most place names, but some get out of hand (ex. Kalifornya)...I think for me it's the spellings more so than the fact that the name is a place. Love Sierra, Georgia, Savannah, Destin, etc. I just want them to be spelled correctly.

I agree with most people here. I like the correct spelling, and I also like place names that are also people names, or were in the past. There have been quite a few US examples, so I'll throw some Australian place names in the mix!

- Adelaide; capital of South Australia
- Sydney; capital of New South Wales
- Victoria; Eastern state
- Darwin; capital of the Northern Territory
- Leonora; mining town in Western Australia
- Esperance (I've met one older lady with this name, so I'm not sure if it is a widespread thing or if her parents were really keen on the W.A. coastal town..)
- Katherine; beautiul town in the NT
- Augusta; W.A. coastal town
- Fitzroy Crossing; not so beautiful WA town
- Derby; see above

There are quite a few places here named after Lords and important men; Melbourne, Broome, Busselton, Walpole and so forth. There are also a lot of Aboriginal place names, such as Kalgoorlie, Widigiemooltha, Kununurra, Karratha, Gingin, Toowoomba and so forth that you could be creative with ;D

Some place names, yes. Some not so much. I know a lot of people in this community disagree with me, but I LOVE the name Daytona for a girl, and want to use it one day. A lot of place names are so common, now, that I don't really think of them as being place names. The Georgias, the Savannahs, the Austins.

My sister's name is Brooklyn and I'm Jordan. We have another sister but she wasn't named after a place... I mean neither were we. Our parents just liked Jordan and Brooklyn was originally called Brooke but they decided it was too short with our last name (Which is one syllable).

She is 23 and was the only Brooklyn I knew for a very long time.
