[Poll #1056252][Poll #1056252]And the way the name looks with the spelling doesn't matter to us; if you think Isobel is prettier than Isabel, then vote for that, rather than picking Isabel because it looks prettier with Amelia.

Well you did the right thing in crossing off Ava if you don't want a popular name. In the last 10 years it's climbed from 833 to 5!
Madeline is 71, but what with the alternate spellings Madeleine, Madelyn, Madalyn, Madelynn & Madalynn all in the top 1000 that makes a substantial rise in the number.

Isabel
Isabell
Isabelle
Izabelle

are all in the top 1000, but Isabella is at number 4 compared to the highest ranking spelling Isabelle at 87.

Isobel doesn't crack it so if you do want a ununual twist then maybe you've found it.

ohhh dear i'm so the insomniac tonight, can you tell!?

In the last 10 years Lily has jumped from 260-33, a steady but fast riser jumping up place wise.. so 260-219= 41 places and so on..
50 17 28 21 24 10 16 14 6

I can definitely see it cacking he top 20/10 soon.
So it's not ridiculously popular now, but it is a very fast mover and will be one of the popular ones soon. I know so many Lily's under 6 already.

Georgia has jumped from 583-273 in 10 years and a pretty slow rate. from '98 to '97 it moved up 99 places and then '99 to '00 80 places but after that it steadies out a lot more and jumps only 76 places in the next 7 years. Those two years are exceptionally large compared to the rest of the jumps it makes from then on.

So if we break down Ava, Georgia and Lily:

In 10 years Ava jumps 734
In 10 years Lily jumps 227 places
In 10 years Georgia jumps 255 places

Ava is moved crazy fast and can be deemed a trend. It will taper off and get boring in a few years.
Lily is a fast mover and could turn into the next Ava
Georgia's numbers look higher because of the two years where there was an abnormally large surge in popularity. It's rising in popularity but i'd say nothing to worry about.

I just get the stats from the top 1000 babynames for the USA list online. Sometimes I can't get over what a geek I am in this subject, why do I find it so interesting!?

you'll have the best named baby on the block, no doubt.

maybe there is a career in this, or maybe you're the next awesome baby book author??? ;)

thanks for the factoids. you've definitely made me re-think. i'd love to see the last five spots or so in popularity (meaning, the least popular of the popular)

Well.. the popular names are popular for a reason.
My generation is full of Rachel's, Rebecca's, Sarah's etc and I hate them all.. so I'm surprised when I do find myself liking lots of the popular names given nowadays and would be perfectly happy using on my own child if I wasn't hindered by this overwhelming name obsession!

Professional babynamer hehe.. i like it..
Last five spots, do you mean the 1000-995
spots?

1000- Flor
999- Joana
998- Izabelle
997- Nicolette
996-Neveah
995- Mina

The top 1000 doesn't take into account all the diferent spellings of one name, so Joanna and Joana are ranked differenly, as you'd expect Joanna being higher.
When the 2005 names came out I counted up all the differnt spellings of Caitlin that apeared, it was about 9 or 10.. added together the number of Caitlins(or Kaitlin etc) was just below that of the third most popular that year.
& I wouldn't be surprised if all of those 257 parents that called their child Neveah last year mispelt the infamous Nevaeh... because surely the only point of that name is it's Heaven spelt backwards. It's a made up name, what do you get out of Haeven backwards? arghh!
