Stop naming boys Ethan! I'm only kidding, of course. ;) But I have loved the name Ethan since I saw the movie All I Want For Christmas when I was 7 years old; I was determined to name my first son Ethan. So I hate that it's become so popular, even though it's a great name! Has anyone else had this experience, where you really love a name, but it has surged in popularity? I hope the Ethan hype dies down when I do eventually have children in a few years. ;)

YES. It seems like I'm constantly having to erase names from my list (or just hope they die down) that I've had on there for YEARS because now they're suddenly popular. My fave boy name for a LONG time has been Isaiah, and for some reason now it's becoming popular.

I'm not ready for babies for at least 7 years or so, so hopefully that's long enough for the craze to go away. But I'm sure people will just popularize other names on my list. :/

(btw, Ethan was also on my list)

my name is Madelynne and although that name (in a variety of spellings) is very popular now, it wasn't when i was little, which i'm glad about.

everything in life goes in phases.

heh when I was pregnant with my daughter, I LOVED the name Sierra. But there were 3 other pregnant women working with me and 2 of them had girls! One named her baby girl Sierra, the other-Ciara. One of them even "thanked" me for helping her come up with a name for her baby!! GRRR!!! So we went with the #2 name on our list...Skylar-we call her Sky

Interesting stats on that one. It's been chart climbing for nearly 50 years! I wonder what happened in 1986 though?

I've scratched a lot of names that became more and more and more common every year. Emma and Chloe were two of the most notable ones. (Though looking back at stats now I can see they were already climbing fast when I thought I was the only one liking them.)

Way interesting stats. I personally think the leap from 262 to 87 (A MASSIVE LEAP) in 1989 is due to Ethan Hawke in Dead Poets Society.

I remember being a in like, fourth grade watching that and thinking Ethan Hawke was just the most awesome name I'd ever heard. And it helped that he was hot, too.

:)
My opinion, at least.

Yes! That happened with the name Jake. I mentioned that's what I wanted to name a boy if/when I have one, and my uncle (who's wife was pregnant) was like "Ooh, I like that." They named him jacob but he's never been called that..only Jake. *sigh*

I also have LOVED Caroline since I was a little girl and now it's becoming popular, which is frusterating.

About 3 years ago I was SET on naming my future daughter Jayden. Then a million people started naming their kids Jayden. I got so mad. lol I also liked Xavier (I wanted to spell it Zavier) but now I know a lot of women with sons named that. Ah, well. Still very adorable names. Now I'm in a traditional phase with baby names.

I had the same problem with the name Aiden. I wanted to name my first son that since I could remember. It held a lot of meaning and history since it was a Celtic name, but now I'm pregnant with a first little boy and it's still too common to use! It sucks.
