What do you all think of the name Alaska for a girl?
It was a book character, and it just popped into my head again. I quite like it, actually.
Also, what middle names would go well with it?

Out of all of the statenames it's probably my favourite, even over the regular names like Georgia, Virginia ..etc

It's a bit out there but yes, I like it.

it's different, but pretty.
unfortunately the only thing that's popping into my head right now is "Alaska Skye" and to me that'd be like naming your kid "Winter Snow"

Mmmmmm.....I'm not sure. I guess it's ok. The only state names I really like are Virginia, Georgia and maybe Nevada.

Its a state, not a person. (Same goes for Georgia, Virginia, etc)

Ditto. And everyone will tease the kid endlessly about it growing up.

They were probably thinking more along the lines of 'Allie'.

I think those two words were names before they were states, actually.

Yes. But now, they are states.

Then how come I knew them as names before I knew them as states?

Really? You, personally, knew them as names before they became states?

Or do you mean you know they were names before states?

Times change, cultures change. And in the 21st century, they. are. states.

I heard them used as names before I knew they were states. Virginia's the name of the main characters in one of my favourite books (from the 1990s). She and her siblins have traditional English names.

I can't remember where I heard Georgia used as a name.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with them still coexisting as names of people and names of states.

So in 1990 you didn't know that Virginia was a state?

I'm guessing you are not American, then. Or are extremely young, and didn't know the states yet in 1990.

Either way, they're still states. People should not be named after places, IMHO.

No, I'm not American, and I was about 13-14 when I read the book for the first time. I guess I learned most of the states a couple of years later.

That makes sense, with your not being American. :)

However, a child in America, being named after a state, gets the oodles teased out of them in school, sadly. Because American kids are really kinda cruel. :(

Not everyone lives in America. Georgia and Virginia are names to me first, states second.

*points down*

If you read the entire thread before commenting, you would notice that I made the observation that the person I was conversing with was not american.

Seriously.

Err, yeah, but I still got the impression that you thought that kids shouldn't be given names that are also the names of states ("Either way, they're still states. People should not be named after places, IMHO."), and that's what I was referring to.

That is exactly how I feel.

"America", "Alaska", "Georgia"...those names are like naming a kid "Germany", "Europe", "England". Stupid.

I like it. You could even call her Ali for short. Or at least.. I would. lol

i'm not totally crazy about it, but it could grow on me, i guess.

i've heard people recently naming their daughter Alabama...and well, I like Alaska a lot better than that.

Alaska Lane?
Alaska Jane?
Alaska Lark?
Alaska Lynn?
Alaska Rynne?

i don't know about a middlename, but I feel sure it should only be one syllable.

ok, that sounds better suited for a street sign. :(

In that case, go for it! :-p

I dig it. For a middle name, I'd pick something multi-syllabic with stress on the first syllable, like Maya or Natalie.

I hate place names as names, unless they were originally first names, like Georgia or Virginia.

It works for me, I guess.

there's a song by a jam band called new monsoon called...i don't know exactly, but something about alaska, and it's basically a story about a woman named alaska who gave birth to a daughter and died from the birth and then the father raised her. it's a good song, and kind of sweet/happy, except for the mom dying part.
i think of the song when i think of alaska as a name.
that and baked alaska.

i'm not sure how i feel about it being used as a child's name.

Alaska used as a name always makes me think of the Velvet Underground song "Stephanie Says." "The people all call her Alaska..."
