what do you think of the name Austin for a girl? I got Blake Shelton's song Austin into my head and got to thinking...I'm currently pon the fence...I think if i ever did use it ( i'm not pregnant) i'd probly change the spelling to 'Austen' for a girl...or maybe not..

Its a boys name as far as I am concerned. Austen doesn't fix that and IMO makes it seem a bit pretentious.

Reminds me of a lady who named her daughter Bradley.

I know a girl named Austin...I believe it was a family name that they ended up using for her. She wears it really well- I almost like it better for a girl, just because it's such an awesome name on her :).

it's masculine. i don't even like it for a boy. i know a few austins and they're all gross. hahaha. i have bad connotations with the name.

i know one boy austin and one girl austin and i like it better for a girl.

i would just spell it the right way though, austen is like jane austen, and if it was in honor of her then okay, but i dont think thats how you mean it

an English teacher at my high school has a 20 year old daughter named Austen, obviously after Jane Austen. I don't think it's too bad.

I'm not too thrilled about the name in general, but I definitely think spelling it as "Austen" gives it a little more girly edge.

I went to high school with a girl named Austine. (pronounced Au-steen.)

It reminds me of Austin Powers, even on a boy. The spelling is neat, though, like Jane Austen. It would make a neat middle name.

There's a few girls out there that have 'boy' names... Drew Barrymore... Daryl Hannah... they're still hot mamas so no one seems to care.

I think Austen for a girl is pretty.

I work in an elementary school that has a Hunter, a Tyler, a Wesli, and a Wilson and THEY ARE ALL GIRLS. And they all have friends and seem to function pretty well. Wesli (her name is Wesli Ann) is a popular little girl, too. Tyler is in the gifted class in her grade.

I'm just saying, there are worse than Austen. I think it's cute BECAUSE it looks like a nod to Jane Austen. Even if that wasn't what you were going for.

I had never heard Wesli for a girl, and just being around this little girl every day makes me LOVE that name. She's such a sweet kid and the other kids don't seem to notice that her name is "a boy name". It just fits her, I guess.

I also knew a Tomi, in high school, and she was the girl at camp that all the guys broke their necks to try to go out with for the week.

What's crazy is that Hunter, at school, has a brother named Haydn. I always think their names should be switched. :)

Oooh, that's unique. I like it. I'd spell it Austen. Makes it even more unique and less boyish because it can be associated with Jane Austen. Who kicks ass so hey, I'd be proud to have that name, even if it's not after her. My name is from the Bible but I like to associate it with a kick-ass ecologist from the 50s, heh. Not that that has anything to do with anything. :P

I'd admire it spelled Austen as a mn, and with the intention of being after the author, not just as a funky spelling. It would be assumed it was after the author regardless I'm sure. I can't say I like it as a fn though. It just doesn't appeal to me sound-wise. I don't really like Austin on a boy either.

I think Austin is cute, but I have run into two probelms with naming my daughter a traditionally boy's name and using an alternative spelling. My daughter's name is Rylee. First I never knew it was traditionally a boy's name until I was already attached to it, so I decided to spell it Rylee so when people saw it they would know she was a girl. Well like I said everyone spells it Riley or Rilee, everyone calls her a HE and even put her on my insurance as a HE. Also no on can pronounce it they call her Ray-lee or Really. I am hoping that since the name is becoming more popular it will get easier for people to say- especially since everyone mispronounces our last name too. Anyway, just some things to keep in mind if you do go with Austen.

I like nongirlie names for girls! I think they're bold and that's how I'd want my daughter to be.

I love the idea, and the spelling of Austen. Go for it!
