Aug. 23rd, 2007 12:51 pmI was just watching the ER when Carole has her twins.
She named them Tess and Kate.
I love love love Kate.
Tess is cute but I wouldn't use it.
WDYT?

Date: 2007-08-23 05:06 pm (UTC)Tess isn't bad, but I don't really like it. It seems like a little kid name to me. I don't know, I wouldn't use it, but it's not bad, and it sounds nice with Kate.

Date: 2007-08-23 05:55 pm (UTC)Sorry. But no.
As a Tessa (and a classical culture nut), it's pretty much my biggest naming pet peeve in the world. Completely, totally separate names, though. Teresa is Latinate and has origins in harvesting, farming, etc. words, whereas Tessa is Greek and has roots in rather obscure words related to slavery.
As slavery/servitude and harvesting/farming have some degree of historical overlap, the assumption is widespread. I know babynames.com has the wrong explanation for Tessa, as do a plethora of other sites. Then again, they're completely user-contribution-based (which makes sense, of course), so the error is understandable — if annoying, at least to me.

Date: 2007-08-23 06:03 pm (UTC)Reminds me of people who think that Alison means 'Alice's son'. :P

Date: 2007-08-23 06:06 pm (UTC)Ah, well. We all have our moments. I prefer Alison with the one L, actually. Two are superfluous, y'know?
For what it's worth, there's a theory that Tessa means Fourth Child, and that Theresa is Latinate but only via Greek, and it all gets rather... dodgy. But in the end, I'm just happy for people to realize that naming a girl Tessa is NOT giving her a nickname-as-real-name!
