Last weekend I saw Stardust, which is a rather good movie. One of the plot points was the King of Stormhold was dying, and the throne would be passed onto one of his sons. Tradition dictated that the sons literally kill each other and the last son alive would become the next ruler of stronghold. There were seven princes:

Primus
Secundus
Tertius
Quartus
Quintus
Sextus
Septimus

Obviously named for the order they were born in.

They also had a sister, Una. I thought that was kind of weird, naming her "one," as if there would only be one princess. What if the king and queen only had daughters?

Any thoughts?

Well, I guess they would have to do 1, 2, 3, etc. instead of First, Second, Third, etc.

I love that book. The movie was pretty good!

Many years ago I worked with a woman named Una. She was one of the managers and would be close to 60ish now. There's also a character named Una in the book Clan of the Cave Bear. I never really liked it as a name. Those boys names are blah too. Although Octavius isn't as horrible...if only there was one more prince. heh

In my HS Latin book the family's son was named Quintus. He was an only child.

I think doing something like that would be dumb in real life but that it works in a fantasy story without seeming stupid.

I knew a guy called Quint, because he was the fifth grandson to be named such-and-such (wish I could remember what it was). I actually think it was pretty cool. Most people didn't think anything of it - I doubt many people even knew Quint was Latin in origin.

I like Latin names a lot, myself. I'm actually kind of glad Harry Potter might inspire a lot of people in naming their children, so that Latin names will come back in style.

I enjoyed the movie but not as much as the book (I really love the book though)
I'm assuming if they had more daughters it would have been
Una, Dos, Tres etc
