I was watching a show tonight and there was a black man on it named "Daouda" (die-ooda) and I instantly fell in love with it. It's an African name meaning "hardworking." What do you think of it? Is it too "ethnic" or just plain "weird?" I'm trying to compile some names that I like and I'm finding it very hard to come up with boy names, so it's rare when one jumps out at me.

It's just plain weird. Unless it's your culture/ language that it comes from.

It's like when you see a white couple from, say, Minnesota name their child Sayuri because they dig Sailor Moon. It just comes off as somewhat jarring, to put it politely. Not every kid's name has to exactly match his heritage, but they should mix better than oil and water, so to speak.

Have you researched Scottish names? There are some cool ones.

I thought it might be too out there for a little white baby with no strong ties to Africa.

This made me laugh, thinking about a little white baby traveling to Africa to visit the motherland in honor of his name. Just the baby, all on his own.

I think its a cool name, but without some kind of connection, it will be a little strange. The little white baby could pull it off if he lived in Africa or his parents were from Africa, but not so much otherwise. If you really love it, use it as a middle name:)
