What are your thoughts on Soleil?

I met a little girl (maybe ten or eleven years old) with this name recently and it's been bouncing around in my head ever since. I can't decide how I feel about, though.

It's my friend's sister's name, I think it's adorable on her.

I like it, although it reminds me of Punky Brewester. The actresses real name was Soleil Moon.

That's what first came to my mind, but I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing.

I don't really like it, although I don't hate it either. Just not a fan, I guess.

i like it. punky brewster is obsolete enough that i'd not draw the reference for more than a split second or so.

my daughter's middle name is Lark. i never was a fan of saved by the bell, but every once in a blue moon someone will mention an actress on there also named Lark.

I think it's stupid, but that's just me. If she goes anywhere where people speak French, she'll probably be laughed at, or her parents will.

why would they get laughed at? maybe im a little slow, but i dont see why.

Well, to me it's like naming an English kid 'Cloud' or something. But again, it's just my personal opinion.

eh. i can see that.

But isnt that true for most names? somewhere, they mean something that another culture will laugh at...

I think Spanish people are confused when they hear my name... Mia... because it means "mine" in their language. Of course, some fo the guys I worked with at restaurants took that opportunity to point to themselves and go, "Mia! Huh-huh. Mia." Not so much.

excuse me, quebecoise.

Yes, but the quebecoise are insane. :P

Seriously, though, my dislike of Soleil is a personal preference, I would not be surprised to hear of a French person naming their kid Soleil - it would just sound weirder in French than in English.

Why would it be any different than naming an English kid Dawn, Star, Summer, or Skye? Perfectly acceptable names. Selena means "the moon" in Spanish, and it's not weird. I don't see why Soleil would seem weird to the French.

I'm not sure about Star and Skye being perfectly acceptable names, but as for Soleil, it just sounds to me like English people trying to be unique. "Oh look, the word for sun in French is kind of cool." Honestly, Soleil isn't horrible, there are a lot of worse names, it just strikes me as awkward and silly.

Punky Brewster.

Also, hard to pronounce in an English-speaking country. Will be frequently called "So-leel" or some variation thereon. Also hard to spell if you just hear it aloud.

If you're in an area with lots of French-speakers, sure, but overall, I'm going with a no on this one.
