so i just saw this commercial for these new dolls i think they were called TIM's or something like that. but the dolls names are what really bothered me.

Frankie
Charlie
Denny
Tatiana (i think thats what it was)
and Shea..

They were ALL girl dolls. as in they werent male dolls. not just that they were meant for little girls to play with.
I dont know why. but it just really bothered me that little girls now have to play with dolls that have BOY names. it just seemed so wrong. :(

I miss my barbies. lol Anyways, I was just wondering what you're reaction to this commercial might be x.x

while i don't like any of THOSE names. i LOVE boy/masculine names on girls. For instance, Elliott for a girl is one of my faves..

I don't like male names on girls either, especially names like Charlie and Frankie. My cat's name at the animal shelter was Charlie (she's a girl) I don't know where they got it from...maybe a nickname for Charlotte?

Well, Skipper isn't exactly the greatest name, either. ;P

I don't feel it's wrong, but I do think it's quite strange. Maybe it's just to make the dolls seem 'tough'? Like, 'girls can be tough too!' But then again, that would be a pretty unnecessary, old fashioned message to send out. I don't know. Interesting.

I looked them up and it looks like they're meant to compete with Bratz dolls. Their names are Charlie, Frankie, Joise, Quinn Jessie, Taylor, Sam, Denny, Tatum and Shea.

From the site

"At a time when our children are bombarded with negative role models and false images of truth and beauty, TIM dolls give us the answer. Her story line is about self- confidence, moral values and wholesomeness. She has dreams, passions and goals…just as every little girl does. She is warm, unique and simply stunning. Her long, vibrant colored hair is as pleasing to the eye as it is to the touch. She is poseable and soft. She is fashionable and fun. She is a value. She is precious, she is every little girl. "

I figure they're way better than those HORRID Bratz dolls, so I'm not going to quibble over names.

I think the dolls are cute.
I've actually seen girls with all of those names except for Denny.
But maybe it's a nickname for Denise.

I'm with you. I don't like boy names on girls- I feel like a pretty little girl-baby deserves a feminine, pretty name. If you give her a name that can have a boyish nickname later, fine. But a girl deserves a chance to be a girl.

Also, there's a vaguely sexist undercurrent in the trend of naming girls' boys names that I don't like. It makes me think of Emily Bronte, who wrote as Ellis Bell, or Nelle Harper Lee, who dropped her first name, so they'd be taken more seriously. I want my girl to be taken seriously for the girl she is and not because someone thinks she might be a boy.

That's an interesting point. If these dolls are meant to be more "moral" than the Bratz dolls (as the promo line suggests), maybe stripping them of feminine names is supposed to in some way limit their sexuality (which Bratz dolls sort of have too much of, inasmuch as that a doll can be sexy). More androgyny for less [feminine] moral failure and/or temptation?
Though I suspect (and hope) that that's reading too much into the matter.

If that were the message behind these new dolls, I'd totally not support it.
It would feel very wrong to me that a girl had to be stripped of part of her femininity just to prevent the sexual implications. A healthier message would be vehicled by making less slutty dolls, still with feminine names.

I think you may be right about the stripping of the sexuality. Then again, what are the Bratz dolls named, I wonder?

I'm also bothered by one of the dolls having the name of a body cream lol (shea butter)
I'm totally with you on the boy names. Plus, it doesn't seem fair at all that one of them gets a proper female name.
