A friend of mine called Alex has a sister called Jael.
He thinks it means precious in Hebrew but according to Behind the Name it means "mountain goat" lol.
What do you think of this name? How would you pronounce it?
I'm totally thinking of a mountain goat called Precious now but then I'm weird :).

well in English it's JAY-el in Hebrew it's Yah-EL
According to "The Complete Book of Hebrew Baby Names" by Smadar Shir Sidi:
"in Hebrew "mountain goat"; in the Bible (Judges), the woman who killed Sisra. Also the name of a place in north Israel. Other forms with the same meaning are Yaala (Yah ah lah'); in Hebrew the symbol of a graceful woman; Yaalat (Yah ah laht'), Yaalat-Chen (Yah ah Laht' Chehn), in Hebrew, "beautiful, charming woman".

You know, there are some really suspect name sources out there. A friend of mine named his daughter Elysia because it meant peaceful....never knowing the whole Elysian Fields, realm of the dead connection. I still think its pretty, and prefer it to Heaven as a name.

It's a very popular name in Israel. I think it was number 1 in popularity last year, and I know about a dozen, including my cousin. It doesn't mean mountain goat; it is a name of an animal, a Capra, but it's used for its biblical meaning; in the bible, Yael (Jael in the silly English translation) killed Sisra. It's pronounced yah-el in Hebrew. It doesn't mean graceful or charming, but it has connotations of bravery and courage because of the famous biblical figure.
