Chinese couple tried to name baby "@"

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese couple tried to name their baby "@", claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line said on Thursday.

The unusual name stands out especially in Chinese, which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke characters to represent words.

"The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means 'love him'," the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the State Language Commission Li Yuming.

You know "Aht" (the way we pronounce @ in Dutch) is an official name here. It's used quite often. And written Ad or At.
but I guess just @ would be kinda weird.

as someone who speaks mandarin, i have to say that "@" only sounds like "love him" when you are incapable of pronouncing "@" properly. which kind of ruins it, really.

Maybe he means that when you transliterate the English word "at" into Chinese, it becomes ai ta or whatever they are saying it is. But then that's really warped.

i think they have a better reason than those "4Real" people... but in my opinion, if they really want to name their child "love him" they should stick to the actual characters. sure they might want to refer to him as "@" in emails or what ever, but can you imagine signing your name on school papers "@"? *eyeroll*
