Aug. 10th, 2007 06:04 pmI've actually never posted my names list before, so here it is
Two brief notes:
1) Spelling and gender are non-negotiable, they are on the list they are on spelled the way they are on the list for a reason, so while I do want to hear your thoughts, I don't really want to hear "I like this name, but spelled this way" or "this should be a boys names" because they are where they are and how they are for a reason
@) Popularity isn't an issue, at least not at the moment. It'll be over 10 years before I have kids, and I'm sure some things will have changed by then, so right now it's just names I'd like and probably use, and I'll deal with the trendy issue when it actually becomes an issue for me
feel free to offer suggestions, comments, and feel very free to suggest middle names (either from sets within the list, or with outside names)
Tally ho!
GIRLS
Victoria Maree (this is the one name I am 100% set on using)
Gwendolyn Julia (I still really like both these names, but I'm a little unsure if I still like them together)
Meredith
Sophia
Naomi
Regina
Norah (I like it more as a middle name)
Miranda
Sonaly (I saw this name on here, it's apparently Brasilian, and I think it's a beautiful name. I plan on adopting from Brasil someday, in which case this name would most likely be used)
I like the combination Meredith Sophia, but would really rather Sophia be a first name. It's not really an issue though
BOYS
Andrew
Kyle
John Titus (I'd call him Titus, everyone else could call him John. I dont want the little nipper being made fun of)
Ross (as a middle name only)
Vaughn
Bradley (I couldn't actually give a kid this name given my history with a Bradley, but I still like it)
Names I could go either way on
Ellis- Everyone says boys name, it's technically unisex, I like it better on girls, but my boy name list is so short...
Dannan- The name of the She-Duck on that PBS show Jakers! (come on... at least on of you out there has watched it). It's really started to grow on me, but I think I like it more for a boys name.
Name I'd give to my sons if they weren't guaranteed to cause torture and self loathing
Hippocampus Erectus
Schneevus

Date: 2007-08-10 10:13 pm (UTC)I strongly dislike Ellis and Dannan -- the latter makes me think of yogurt.
Your others are ones I like or am indifferent on, though I don't much like Titus either. Miranda is my daughter's name, so it's obviously my favorite. I consider Vaughn a last name, not a first name, but like it anyway.

Date: 2007-08-10 10:52 pm (UTC)I don't know Sonaly but I'd confirm it's Brazilian before you use it. I like the idea of using a name from the child's birth country.
I like the boys names except Vaughn. I believe it's a surname and properly spelled Vaughan, and even then, I knew a Vaughan I couldn't stand so...
I dislike both your unisex names and unisex names in general, but if you like Ellis have you considered Alice or Ellen?

Date: 2007-08-10 11:01 pm (UTC)I agree about confirming, but I haven't been able to find it on behind the name or on babynames. Obviously this isnt the end of my search, I just need to look harder.
I guess Meredith was originally a boys name or something? I dunno, I just didn't want anyone jumping on me about that, or any others. I probably should've worded my disclaimer better, but I remember I asked a question on Gwendolyn before and most of the comments I got were "the traditional spelling is Gwendolen" or "I like it spelled Gwendolen" well, I've considered that, lets focus on the name itself, not the spelling. Maree is a family name, which is why I'm using that spelling

Date: 2007-08-11 12:29 am (UTC)I like most of your boys' names...'Ross' however means 'horse' in my language, so I could/would never use that.
And yeah, the Hippocampus will always be an area of the brain (the one where the memory is stored, if I remember correctly) to me, and never a name for a child...

Date: 2007-08-11 02:07 am (UTC)i like your girls names, but your boys names are kind of blah. except maybe ross, that's not so common. i think ellis would be great on a boy, though.
for all the hippocampus naysayers, it means "seahorse" in greek. the part of your brain associated with memory looks kind of like a twisty seahorse tail so some nerdy scientist decided it would be cute to name it after its animal look-a-like (oh, the useful things you learn in histology class). too bad it'd sound weird as a name, i kind of like it :)

Date: 2007-08-11 02:52 am (UTC)I know a girl named Naomi Lenore. I'm not a fan of Lenore AT all, but I reeeealllly like the way it flows. So I'd personally try to think of names that give a similar effect. But that's just me.
For the record, I changed my name to the name of an abusive ex-boyfriend! (It's a unisex name). It has taken a LOT of work to detach the name from that connotation, but it was my favourite name (and one I identified with) long before I'd met him... just saying. Anything is possible! Yeah, now to get the gaping flash card picture of Wyoming out of my head...
Hmm. If I was a nurse or someone recording someone's baby name, I'd think Hippocampus Erectus was a joke. But I studied Psychology and would think of the part of the brain, the hippocampus, which my professor taught us a way of remembering its function with this story: A hippo goes to campus and asks for help finding his class. Someone takes it by the hand/hippoarmthing and leads it around. But it keeps forgetting and doing it again and again... anyway, the part of the brain serves function with memory. Annnyway.
I like the name Ellis. As well as Elis. I'm not trying to suggest an alternative spelling! Just stating.

Date: 2007-08-11 04:16 am (UTC)Titus is the exception, I absolutely love the Gormenghast novels by Mervyn Peake, and they are so underrepresented in the literary world. Most of the names in the novels are pretty offbeat (Steerpike, Fuschia) but for some reason I am really drawn to the name Titus (one of the main characters).

Date: 2007-08-11 05:21 am (UTC)victoria
sophia
meredith
andrew
kyle
vaughn (one of my absolute fav. names!)
bradley (another one of my favorites!)
ellis reminds me of my friend's son's middle name, ellery. i rather like ellis, though. it's feminine enough for a girl, but not TOO girly for a boy.
dannan makes me think of the yogurt haha... i never thought of it for a name before. it's not bad, though, really.
