interesting article, but i don't agree with a few of the names the author targets, specifically jakob and kristofer. those aren't "creative" spellings - i have a friend named kristofer and it's because he's danish and norwegian. jakob is, i believe, the german version of jacob (?). i've also heard it for a polish guy i knew in college. i support taking names that have been americanized and using them in their alternate forms, especially if it's to show off your actual heritage.
i dont know whats interesting about an article written by a judgmental person who has childhood angst about their own name and has decided that all other people w/o names in the top ten are going to drown in their own 'originality'...
We had a survey in this very community not THAT long ago, and on the whole (ON THE WHOLE, folks, not every single respondent), people with less common names were happier with their names than people with more common names.
I agree that it's asking for trouble when you insist on using a common name but then misspelling it; the anti-uncommon name business, however, is unfounded, petty, and a bit pathetic, in that funny way.
I do agree that names should be spelled correctly though. Holli, Christi, Brandi, Madisyn, Ashleigh, etc., should all die as name spellings. My own name is included in that list.
I didn't get what was wrong with all the names she said were awful. And maybe I'm missing something, but was she basically saying that common names were bad...and uncommon names were bad too? So what are people supposed to name their kids then?
