I hate "unisex" names.. because you'd never see one for a guy being "Stacy" and the dude not getting made fun of for it (even though Stacy started out a male nick name for Eustace). Simply put you want stolen male names for girls :) (okay, I'm sorry if that sounds rude.. I'm VERY cranky tonight!)
I like Ashley, Sydney and Rylie... but I like them better on boys.
Well, I am not looking to "steal" male names for girls. I am looking for unisex names (ex suitable for both sexes). Sure many unisex names may have been originally male names a long time in the past, but let's face it alot of "female" names are also derived from male names because there are just alot more names for males. Paul/Paula Daniel/Danielle Simon/Simone Joseph/Josephine Michael/Michaela
I don't think you would see very many people naming their son Josephine but it is derived from a male name.
But back to unisex names, let me give you a better example of what I mean My name is Aubrey, I am a woman. A groomsman in my wedding is named Aubrey, he is, well a man. Neither of us get made fun of for our name by the way. And while you might say that Aubrey was originally a male name it has been used as both for a long enough time to become truly unisex.
To me when you hear a unisex name you don't immediately think that person MUST be male or MUST be female.
What I want is names that are unisex but that you especially like for a girl rather than a boy.
See you even shot your own self in the foot. No, a mother or father would NOT name their son Josephine, because it has a MALE that it derrived from, Joseph. It is not a name for either gender.
Aubrey is a stolen male name, instead of making a female name that closely goes with it, like Joseph and Joshephine, they instead decided it would become a female name.
Unisex names are almost always male names that people have been able to disassociate themselves with in order to clear it up in their head that it may be male or female. 90% of the time when most people hear a unisex name they DO call that child Male or Female based on Common trends. Simple as that really... it's all to do with Common Trends, and nothing to do with unisex vs single sex names at all.
You want common trend names for females... simple as that.
Yes I know that Josephine was derived from a male name and is not, in itself, a male name. My point was simply that there were originally more male names that female names and that is why many female names are derived from male names or started out as male names. However, I suppose including that just confused my point.
I did also say that unisex names are often male names that have been used as both for a long enough time to become unisex. I don't, personally, look at these names as being "stolen".
What I asked for was people's favourite unisex names. I was hoping some people might mention names that one doesn't necessarily think "this is a boy's name" or "this is a girl's name". If you think that it is impossible, that's fine. If you think that's trendy, that's fine too. Thank you for your point of view.
Unisex names are perfectly fine for boys but I have no problem thinking up boys names that I like, if I did I may have asked that question ;P
I do have a problem thinking up names for girls that my fiance and I agree on so I thought I'd try a completely new vein and see if you guys could help me come up with anything.
I'm not talking about Ryan and Dylan and Devon here I'm asking for truly unisex names.
For example I have a unisex name (Aubrey). I have no problem with it, never got teased for it. I know a guy with the same name as me, he has no problem with it, never got teased for it.
I don't see why the world would end if a guy or a girl had a unisex name.
I hate when people try to tell you that a truely masculine name is not actually that. I get shit for Aubrey all the time.. people keep saying "it's always been a girl name!" and I just wanna scream "Aubrey is passed down to males of my family since the 1800s." It's rather annoying.
Jordan came to mind immediately; it's one of my guilty pleasure names for girls. Then I grabbed my Baby Name Wizard and skimmed through the androgynous names...I kind of like Carmen too, but nothing else jumped out at me right away.
As someone who HAS a unisex name (that is 90% or so used for girls), I don't like any of them. It's very annoying to get mail addressed to the wrong gender.
Also, I don't really believe there are unisex names, just names that are often used on the wrong sex.
I have a unisex name too. I don't mind what the prefix on my junk mail is :) Also when telemarketers call asking if Mr So-and-so is home, it gives me an easy out!
I'm not all that fond of unisex names on girls. I tend to favor really feminine-sounding names for girls, and unisex names, as they were generally once male-only names, tend to sound rather masculine to me.
I love Tyler for a girl (But I like it spelt Tyla). Most names considered 'unisex' I like better on a girl (except Kelly, which I like on a boy) But I have a unisexed name and it has been the bain of my existence for my entire life, so I'm going to try and give my kids names that are easily defined to a gender.
