Ok, I thought I would ask about this here. I always get Jaime/Jamie confused. I thought that one was the male form and the other was the female. Now, I thought it was Jaime=boy, Jamie=girl, but as I was looking this up, I got odd answers. Babyname.com said both were unisex. Wikipedia said for Jaime: "The "j" In this name is often pronounced as an "h" sound. Jaime is a common Hispanic and Portuguese name for James. In eastern Spain, Jacobus became "Jacome" or "Jaime"; in Catalonia, it became "Jaume"."

Then for Jamie it says it was originally only for male, but since the 1950s it has also been used as a female name.

So... was I wrong? That Jaime/Jamie aren't for boy/girl (or girl/boy) but for spainish pronoucation/english pronoucation? What do you guys think? Which would you use for a girl?

On a similar note, a show I watch has a girl named Jaimie and while at first I thought it looked goofy, it's growing on me. It could be worse, it could be Jaymye O.O

In the US, they are both pronounced as Jamie, and the Jaime spelling is more commonly used on boys. You were right, but they've become more unisex over the years.

I really hate the name, though.

Yeah, it wouldn't be a name I would use for a child, I was just curious about the meanings for a story I'm writing.

The funny thing? I'm from the US, hence why I thought one was for each gender, but when I looked it up, I thought maybe I had remembered things wrong. XD

I think both spellings are interchangeable as far as gender. Whichever spelling you like for whatever gender. I love the name, but I can't figure out if I like it better on a boy or a girl. Haha.

I've known boys named Jaime and girls named Jamie. Only one boy pronounced it hai-may instead of jay-mee.

Jaime is the Spanish spelling of the name James. It has roots in Hispanic culture and is pronouned Hi-may (simply put). It is a predomenantly MALE name that has been taken and mutilated by Americans.

Jaime and Jamie are TWO SEPARATE NAMES. They are pronounced different, Jamie is considered more a nick name than a full name and Jaime is much like Jorge (George) or Enrique (Henry). It is another cultures name and did NOT originate in America and it kills me to see it being butchered.

Jamie was initially short for James, the tv show SuperVicky featured a Jamie (Vicky's brother). Then somehow they started using it on girls, which I don't like.
Jaime is the spanish version of James, I'm 99% sure it's pronounced HIGH-meh.
