What names do you think Des could be short for? It popped in my mind and I'm liking the sound, but all I can think of is Desirée and Desideria (girls' names).

I'd also like to know what you think of the following names

GIRLS
Jersey
Mallory

BOYS
Declan
Delaney

Des makes me think of Desperately Seeeking Susan - the Aidan Quinn character.

Des could be Desmond (boy)

Desmond is what it's usually short for in guys- I can't think of anything else.

Showing my age....

Sorry, showing my age. Desperately Seeking Susan was an '80s movie -and one of the only movies Madonna was in that is watchable..

Adian Quinn plays "Des," who is a guy that falls for Rosanna Arquette.

I don't know if his name was Desmond, but I have heard the name Desmond before. There's also Desi - as in the son of Lucille Ball and Ricky Ricardo.

I like Mallory, but Jersey is one of the more horrendous place names I've heard. Do you really want your daughter to share a name with a state whose nickname is "the armpit of America?" (Nothing against New Jersey, just saying...)

I also like Declan, but I've always considered Delaney a girl's name, with Lane(y) as a nickname.

I love Jersey and Declan. I like Delaney - but I like it on a girl.

I hate the name Kennedy SO much, so now I've got a reason other than "um, it's ugly?" when people ask me why I hate it, haha.

The first thing I think of when I hear the name Jersey is the state, followed by a sports jersey (if you don't live in the US you guys might call it something different -- that's what we call the shirts people wear while playing sports). So, honestly, I don't really think of it as a pretty name, especially for a girl. At all.

I think Delano was his mother's maiden name, and I don't think it recalls it at all. FDR is my all-time favorite President, I'm a history/politics geek, and I didn't even make that connection. Besides, I would consider Delaney to be the more feminine version of Delano, if you were going for that.

I do like the name Declan

Like others have said, I think of Delaney more as a girl's name (even though it is technically unisex), particularly because it's my daughter's name. We decided on the spelling of Delanie, though, because I think it makes it more feminine that way. I guess I feel that way partly because my dad chose the spelling of Ashlie for me because he thought that looked more feminine, since Ashley is also unisex.

I LOVE Declan for a boy, though. It's one of my favorites.

As far as the others go, I like Mallory, but I agree with the others about Jersey. I'm not a huge fan of all the place names that have gotten so trendy (Dakota, Savannah, Montana, London, etc.)

Jersey is a breed of cow. I'd never do that to my daughter.

Besides the state, that is the first thing I think of, as well. It would be a particularly unfortunate name if she grew into a hefty girl.

Oh my yes. Middle school is hard enough as it is, so why give the other children extra ammunition??

that's what I think of first as well.

Adesse (ad-ess-a). Latin, means "to be present". I saw it used once as a name and it stuck with me.

Mallory's all right, but I don't really like the rest of the names.

Jersey makes me think of Coyote Ugly - Maria Bello, the bar owner, calls Violet "Jersey" because Violet sounds too innocent and Violet is from New Jersey

and personally, I'm not a fan of state/place names (dakota, carolina, arizona, india, paris, etc.)

Mallory, to me sounds really little-girlish. which is ok when she's a little girl, but she will spend most of her life being older than a little girl. however, thats just me.

history/politics geek here too!!

its my major/minor, respectively. FDR's not my favorite, Truman is (i'm considering it for a middle name) but FDR is up there. I'm also pretty sure Delano was his mother's maiden name.

I don't like Kennedy either (is that for a girl or a boy?) but a a sort of similar sounding version I like is McKenna (for a girl).

Also, as an American History major, I maintain that Kennedy is the most overrated president, and he really wasnt that good; I fail to see why people make such a big deal out of him. So I couldn't use it as a name.

and, btw, i love your icon! I love jon stewart like whoa; he's hilaroius, incredibly hot, liberal... perfect!!! i wish he wasnt married! in any case, I'd totally fuck him senseless =P

Most people tend to use Kennedy for a girl, but I guess I just associate it with JFK too much, so I think of it as a boy's name. Kennedy is one of my favorite Presidents, but I totally agree - he IS very idealized. He made mistakes just like everyone else, and he didn't do a LOT while he was in office, but I think he had really good ideas, and what he did accomplish in the short time he was in office was (mostly) good stuff.

Jon Stewart is one of the few men I'd go straight for :) I love him!

I'm a Political Science major, and History was my second major up until last week when I changed it to Creative Writing - I might still minor, though. In any case, I've always got my TV on the History channel :)

Thanks :) My middle name is Jean; french enough for you?

You know, the meaning of my name used to bother me when I was younger(I still tease my mom today for not knowing the meaning before she named me). But I've come to realize that bad stuff happens to everyone, even if your name means joy or happiness. Actually, I was more upset that my name was so uncommon. Now, I can't picture having a popular name- I like being special in a way.
