Yarn? Had my mother gotten her way, Briar Rose would've been my name.

Would she have named me Briar Rose in a good way? I'm sorry, I'm not understanding your questions. (And, yes, naming me Briar Rose would've been in a "good" way. It comes from her favorite Disney movie, Sleeping Beauty. I rather like the name.)

I really like Mariska and Ada for the girls. Archer, Damien, Dimitri, Elias, Gideon, Judah, Nehemiah, Oliver and Porter for the boys. I'm extremely picky about girls names. I haven't found a theme to what I like there as opposed to boy names where I know what I'm going for. I tend to go for classic, biblical or African boy names.

I love Briar, Greer, Harper, and Mae for girls.

Boys: Deacon, Gideon, Judah!!!, Micah, Noah, Oliver, and Olivier (but I think you'll be hard pressed to get most people to pronounce it right.)

I also really love Louisa, Briar (My great aunt's name), Joely, Caleb, Oliver and Noah

I think are perfectly good names, but I don't care for:
Ada, Eulalia, Felicity, Jamie, Joely, Louisa, Lucia, Mae, Maria, Mariska, Meredith, Nicolette, Andre, Atticus, Caleb, Christian, Colin (one l), Damian (a, not e), Demetrius, Dimitri, Elias, Gideon, Judah, Malachi, Micah, Olivier

Wrong sex/ surname/ word, not a name/ huh?:
Briar, Greer, Hadley, Harper, Poet, Archer, Deacon, Forrester, Foster, Kaiis (this is the huh?), Mason, Nehemiah, Porter, Ryder, Sawyer, Thatcher, Truman

If you have to include a pronunciation guide for a name, I don't generally think the name is a good idea.

Name "Greer" or "Grier"

Hullo :)

Wrong sex/ surname/ word, not a name/ huh?:
Briar, Greer

So you don't care for "Greer" or "Grier" due to it originating from a Scottish *surname*? I'm not offended, but my husband and I were considering "Grier" as a first or middle name if our next child is a daughter and so I'm curious as to your objection. By and by, it's a bit of a challenge with names in our family anyway since we've a relatively large family and so many good names were taken before our son (the first grandchild) was born :p. Yet, we're also a traditional family overall, and so we don't want names to be too "out there" for us. (Also, William Daniel is currently in the lead for another son but so are other choices, as with the girls' names :p!)

Cheers,
Catherine

I don't like surnames as first names, particularly not on girls. And I say that as a girl who HAS a surname as a first name. I just think it lacks femininity and I get irritated at people not knowing which name is my first name and whether I'm a boy or a girl.

In addition to the confusion factor I think "Grier" has a harsh, growling sound to it and a pretty little girl deserves a pretty name.

I think surnames are okay as middle names if they're a family name (which I also have).

William Daniel is a lovely name. William is a family name of mine and Daniel for my husband and they are on my list for boys.

Thank you lneef :)

I understand what you're saying. We did like the uniqueness of the name and actually the sound to an extent, but it is only one of several choices. By the way, I love your choice of boy names, particularly since our son's name is James Daniel and is also a combination of family names :)! We (and the family) only call him James since we don't care for "Jim" or "Jimmy". We'd also be fine with him going by "Daniel" at some point if he prefers it to "James".

(By the way, my husband is concerned about privacy with the LJ thing and wants me to make my journal private again. I'd love to correspond with you further since we appear to have some common interests with both being attorneys and mommies :). If you're interested, then did you want us to make our journals viewable to each other :)?)

Cheers,
Catherine

Oh my! I just realized that I misspoke in my initial reply, stating that "William Daniel" is on our list! As mentioned, our son's name is already James Daniel! I meant to say "William DAVID", also a combination of family names! This is what happens when I type when I'm too tired! You'd think that I already have another case of the dreaded pregnancy brain but before conception this time!

Since our family is partly of Irish-American heritage, a few of other names that we've had on our list of boys' names since before James' birth include "Sean Michael" where we'd use "Michael" since "Sean Michael" sounds better to us than "Michael Sean" but there's already a Sean in the family ;), "Paul Liam" where we lean toward "Liam"; and "Michael Seamus" where we again lean toward using "Michael".

For girls, we've many choices but we've leaned toward those with "Elizabeth," such as "Elizabeth Maeve", "Maeve Elizabeth", and "Lillian Elizabeth". I did notice that we've many more choices for girls, in part because the male family members' names are carried down more often.

Since we've used and plan to use at least some family names, we may use a name but not call our child by it since that person (such as Grandpa or Great-Grandpa or Great Auntie) are still with us. In the case of naming our child after a family member who has passed, we agreed to decide on a case-by-case basis as to whether to call our son/daughter by that family member's first name or call our child by his/her own unique name (even if it's actually our son/daughter's middle name).

Everyone in the family is just grateful that I've been better at children's names than pet names :p. For fun, I made my username out of an amalgamation of initials for past pet's names which included "Dilly", "Lottie" and "Netty" the three fish (I was young!), "Edie" the turtle and "Olive" our dog (rest their sweet souls), "Izzy" the cat, and so on :p! My parents were so indulgent :p.

Well ta for now :). I worked a shortened day today and was able to LJ earlier than usual but now a certain little man has needs :).

Cheers!
Catherine

I'm quite against using a kid's middle name for him to go by. My husband is a Daniel Sean who's always been Sean and it's incredibly inconvenient. I say if you want to give the child a name you won't use, put it in the middle.

Sean's a nice name. I also love Seamus. We have a very Irish last name though so I'm trying to avoid names that are TOO Irish as first names- it's just an overload.

Elizabeth's way up on my list for another girl. It's my grandmother's name and I've always liked it.

Curious- how do you feel about your name? My 5-month-old is named Catherine and I hope she loves it as she grows up.

Aw, a baby girl :). Indeed, good choice of name for her ;). Another coincidence is that my husband is a Daniel also! That's where James' middle name originates :).

If your child is all or part Irish/Irish-American, then having a very Irish name would be okay wouldn't it? Or do you want something more general? That sounds like the case.

I understand what you're saying about first and middle names. We just find that sometimes you want to honor someone who is still living and so you don't want to verbally use that name or that certain names sound and look better in their entirety if one says or writes the full name with the desired first name listed as the middle name and vice versa.

By confusion, do you mean with paperwork and the like? I've encountered that some in my work.

Oh, I like my name very much, though "Katherine" with a K might be considered prettier by some and is more faithful to the original Greek name ;). Your daughter will surely be happy with her name. It's a bit common but it's also classic while still being professional and versatile: As a child, my family called me "Catie", and many of our male relatives still do, particular the older ones, which is fine since I understand it to be affectionate not diminutive. For example, my grandfathers sometimes say "You'll always be my Catie" :), and my brothers and uncles often use "Catie" as well. Even Dan fluctuates between "Cate" and "Catie" as I fluctuate between "Dan" and "Daniel". My friends most often use "Cate". My mother, other female relatives and colleagues and client use "Catherine" most often.

In regards to the journals, I temporarily made my public again since I don't yet understand how to make it viewable to select bloggers. I see the "Friends" option but am not sure if adding you as a friend is sufficient? Am I friend on yours? Do I need do anything for either? I don't want to post pictures until I've increased the security of the journal. For the present, I've spent the day researching some rather dry intellectual property material and don't have it in me to research LJ further. Perhaps tomorrow.

If your child is all or part Irish/Irish-American, then having a very Irish name would be okay wouldn't it?

Whenever my husband introduces himself, he gets "Wow, you must be Irish, ha ha ha!" as if it's the first time he's ever heard that. I'd just like to avoid that, as it's annoying. Nothing against Irish names.

By confusion, do you mean with paperwork and the like?

Constant. He explains constantly that he uses his middle name and yet people switch the two, put in an initial in strange places, call him by his first, refuse to let him put his middle on forms, etc. I would never, ever call a child by their middle name unless they chose to do so when they grew up. He just wastes so much time explaining himself. I'd rather just find two names that sound good in that order.

My husband's mother always wanted a son with the name Sean, so she called him that. I asked her why she put it in the middle and she said it was because she felt using Daniel in the first spot was to honor his dad. I asked her why honor him with the first spot if you don't use it. Then she got sort of mad at me so I dropped it, but I feel that's a valid question.

I prefer Catherine with a C for the Catholic saint connection, but they're both nice. I use Cate here and there but she's mostly just Catherine.

I just friends-lock my entries and add people as friends who can see them. I placed you on that list.

Yes, my mother was going for the same version as the various St. Catherines :). After which one did you name Catherine? Incidentally, I'm working from home this morning because I've a morning appointment before going into the office. So I'll write a bit more over in my journal at some point to get a few things off my chest.

Cheers,
Cate

I like your taste. I love:
Leila, Lena, Louisa and Meredith

Caleb, Deacon, Elias, Judah, Oliver, Porter and Thatcher.

A couple in our church named their first son Caius. I don't like the name, but I think this spelling looks much for pronounceable and "correct" than your double i. Just my thoughts.

Girls
Ada -sure!
Aurelia - eh.
Briar - No.
Erica - pretty, classic.
Eulalia - reminds me of echolalia, a schizophrenia symptom. Felicity - not a fan.
Georgia - pretty. A friend of mine named her daughter Georgia Belle.
Greer - I like it, but there's something about it that would keep me from using it.
Hadley - masculine.
Harper - not horrible.
Jamie - boring.
Joely - cute.
Leila - eh.
Lena
Louisa/Luisa - I like it with the 'o.'
Lucia - Would you pronounce it "Lucia"? I like it.
Mae - Good for a middle name.
Maria - boring.
Mariska - no.
Meredith - classic.
Nicolette - Too frou-frou.
Poet - Nope.

Boys
Andre - meh.
Archer - Nope.
Atticus - It's okay.
Caleb - classic.
Christian - overdone.
Collin - always makes me think of "colon."
Damien - Too "The Omen."
Deacon - Nah.
Demetrius - awful.
Dimitri - no.
Elias - not bad.
Forrester - No.
Foster - Love it for a middle name.
Frank - Um.
Gideon - Never liked this name.
Judah - Too much like "Judas."
Kaiis (kai-us) - No one would be able to pronounce this.
Malachy (Mal-uh-kee) - Ditto.
Mason - Like it.
Micah - Too feminine-sounding.
Nehemiah - Too biblical.
Noah - Okay.
Oliver - I like it, but it gives me the same feelings as "Greer."
Olivier (O-liv-ee-aye) - Too frou-frou.
Porter - Reminds me of a porterhouse steak.
Ryder - Nah.
Sawyer - Nah.
Thatcher - Nah.
Truman - Maybe for a middle name.

Seems to me that you've chosen a lot of antiquated professions (forrestor, archer, thatcher, porter) for boys' names.

Erica, Georgia, Leila, Lucia, Mae, Mariska, Meredith, and Nicolette are my favorites of your girl's list. Greer, I don't like the sound. I prefer Lila over Leila. Poet is over the top.

Collin, Demetrius, Dimitri, Nehemiah, Oliver are the only ones I like for the boys list. I know a Nehemiah. I don't like any job names, like Archer, Mason, Forrester, Thatcher. Plus, Thatcher makes me think of Margaret Thatcher. Ryder is the faux name of way too many porn stars.
But Collin is one of my absolute favorite names.

I like Ada and Briar. I, also, like Aurelia. :3

I know you have Lucia as a girl name, and it's okay, but I prefer Lucius for a boy.

Atticus, Damien, Micah, Oliver, and Olivier are all very cute. I do not like the pronunciation of Malachy. I prefer Mal-uh-ky (spelled Malakai).
