The boyfriend and I were watching a movie and the previews were on for some film. They called one of the girls Hera. He exclaims "Did they just call her Hera!? I like that name," and I was quite impressed he liked such a great name. I have thought of Hero before but not Hera.
Just wondering...I have heard it pronounced two ways. Hair-uh (thats how he said it) and Hear-uh (how i would read it)...how do you say it?
I would really consider naming my daughter this, even though the goddess is jealous and vengeful. She still kicks ass.

Date: 2007-07-14 01:24 pm (UTC)There is a TV show on now, Battlestar Galactica, where they also have a little girl in it named Hera.
I've heard Americans pronounce it both ways as well. The Greeks would have pronounced it hair-uh, so that's how I would do it. But, of course, if you use it, how it gets pronounced (the Greek way or the English way) is entirely up to you!

Date: 2007-07-14 02:49 pm (UTC)not really a fan of how it sounds either way.
I wouldn't let it the jealous&vengeful stuff stop me though, if I liked the name.
I used to like Calia which is close to Kali, the hindi goddess of destruction
