My sister-in-law is expecting and, if they have a girl, she's wanting to name her either Margaret, Mabel, or Ada.

I really like all of these a lot, but I think I'm leaning towards Margaret just because of all the great nicknames (I would probably call her Greta, Maisie, or Molly).

Which do you prefer and why?

i love margaret. ada is nice, too, but there are no nickname possibilities for it and i like that with margaret. maybe she'll be a maggie, maybe a meg, maybe a molly...

mabel is okay, but it seems so old fashioned. that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's definitely one that i picture being on someone who's 70 and not 7.

I love Mabel - it is a family name and sounds so sweet. Margaret is also very nice.

Well, out of all of them, Margaret is my favourite. If I had a daughter and named her Margaret, I'd probably call her Meg (not all the time, just as a nickname). But I also like Mabel and Ada a lot. I doubt many other little girls will be named Mabel, so that could be another plus for that name. Ada might get confused with Ava, that's the only con I can think for it.

I adore the name Ada. I like Mabel. Margaret is kinda boring to me.

all of them are lovely. my favorite is definitely mabel. it's so sweet and underused. i can easily see it on a young child and a grown woman.

I'm torn between Margaret and Ada.
I know a Margaret really well, and sometimes it's so much fun to bother her and call her "Peggy".
But really, both names are terrific. Mabel is the epitome, at least in my opinion, of frumpy old lady names.

of course, if they go with Margaret, you'll have to call her what they want you to call her, not what you want. they may hate the nicknames you like and get mad if you use them.
