My boyfriend's favourite name, the name that he wants to name the first daughter that comes along in his life, is Llueva. Apparently it is Spanish for rain. (Now, I have only taken Spanish 101 so I haven't learned weather words yet, but I'll take his word for it, he heard it on a vacation to Mexico. :P)

What I do know is that there are many different dialects of Spanish and the double l is pronounced differently everywhere you go. Sometimes it has a jy sound, others just y, and sometimes a ly sound. He prefers the latter.
So it is pronounced, essentially, Lou-ava.

WDYT? I don't really feel strongly one way or the other about it.

I think it's a pretty name. I would make sure it means what he thinks it does, of course. ^_^

Even if Lou-ava isn't the way it's 'supposed' to be pronounced, I think most people would pronounce it that way anyway.

It's pronounced either Yoo-ava or Joo-ava. The J is very soft, almost an -sh sound. That will be true of most dialects - I've never heard the double L pronounced as an L.

My spanish speaking mummy laughed hard when I asked her... She kept saying "you-via".. much like that hangie ball in the back of your throat...

Regardless, I dislike the name. But that's my opinion on it.

The word for rain as a noun is "lluvia", pronounced YU-via.
I am terrible at parts of speech so i can't tell you exactly what "llueva" is, but one way you would use it is to say you wanted it to rain. ("quiero que llueva") According to a source I found online, it is a present subjunctive..

Also, the double L sound is pronounced like a y or very soft j.
Lluvia is sounds nice, though it is pretty much never heard of as a name in Spanish-speaking countries. I don't personally care for it, but maybe it's because I'm just used to it referring to actual rain and not people haha.

"Llueva" is hard to translate by itself because it's a verb in subjunctive form. "Ojala que llueva," for example, means "Hopefully it will rain." If you want the noun for "rain" - "Lluvia" is what you are looking for ; )

Btw I should add that it needs to have "que" in front of it in order for it to make sense in speech, so that's mainly why it wouldn't make a good name.

the most common pronounciation is closer to You-eh-vah.

I think the double initial L's might be quite a challenge when she starts learning to read & write.

p.s. but, on second thought, maybe you could call her Lou Ava, deriving it from that. Although I have to say Ava Lou sounds so gorgeous that I'm gonna suggest that instead :P
