[identity profile] geogirl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I found out last week that we are having a little girl. My husband and I have two names that we like:

Caroline Grace
Allison Grace

I'm partial to Caroline and he's partial to Allison. Our daughter's name is Madelyn Elizabeth. I really want another classic girl name with 3 syllables. I also prefer not to use nicknames (ie Maddie), which is the main reason I prefer Caroline to Allison. With Allison I would have a hard time not wanting to call her Ally, but I feel like if I call her Ally, then people will take it upon themselves to call Madelyn Maddie. That may be silly, I know!

Grace is a wildly popular middle name, but it also happens to be the first name of my husband's grandma and she will be very pleased. Elizabeth is both my middle name and my grandma's middle name, so we wanted to honor his side this time.

Tell me what you think!

I think maybe Caroline is a little close to Madelyn in sound.
Considering that some people will try and read it as Carolyn.

Allison sounds better paired with Madelyn.

p.s. about the nn's, Caroline can be easily made into Carrie, no name is nickname-safe!

I don't think you can lose there, they're both great names.

People are going to call your kids whatever they want to. I'm a Kathleen that goes by Katie and I get someone calling me Kathy nearly on a weekly basis. I would go with whatever you like best.

I like both a lot, but I have to say that I prefer Allison. It was on my list of girls' names, too, so that's probably why. :*)

Caroline. Allison is much more... I don't know. It seems like a trendy name from the late 80s, early 90s, but like it's out dated now. Caroline seems more classic and timeless to me.

Plus, I think it flows better with Grace, and you're right about the nickname thing.

I think Madelyn is pronounced more like Mad-uh-LIN, and Caroline is with an -ine at the end instead. Allison and Madelyn rhyme, but Caroline doesn't.

I normally like the name Caroline better but Allison Grace is a lovely name.

I am also not a huge fan of Caroline and Madelyn.

Either way they kid with have a nice name (nothing terndy or unique :) ) so I would go with whichever you prefer.

Any name that ends in 'son' is automatically masculine in my book, and therefore unusable on a girl. Alisande is a good alternative.

I think Caroline is definitely your best bet. It is timeless and classy and terrificly feminine without being overly frilly and fussy.

I suppose Caroline will be pronounced Care-o-line, but in case it were read like Carolyn, then it would rhyme with Madelyn. Allison wouldn't rhyme because the vowel sounds are slightly different (depends on your accent, I guess) but mostly because one is a -Lyn sound, the other a -Son sound

Caroline Grace is a lovely name! If she's insistent that people do not call her Carol, then she should be fine. I know a few Davids and no one calls them Dave because the Davids do not like it. Did that make sense?
Either way, I love the name! =)

I like Caroline Grace better.

Not to mention...if you are trying to avoid nicknames....In my life I have known something like 6 Allisons (btwn high school, college etc.) and every single one went by Ally or Ali.

Really?! I went to school with three A[l]lisons (one was Allison, the other two Alison), and not ONE went by a nickname. There goes the comment response I almost posted!

And just for the record: I think I prefer Caroline in this sibset. Not sure why, but I do. People will always refer to your daughters by listing the older one first (it's the way English grammar psych works, I think), and "Madelyn and Caroline" somehow sounds nicer to me than "Madelyn and Allison". Say them out loud, and maybe it'll make sense?

I like both, actually, but if I had to pick one I'd go for Allison Grace. I think it flows better.

LOVE Caroline Grace. Carolyn? Is there a way you prefer to spell it? Not crazy over Allison though. :)

my sister's name is allison :) i think it's a pretty name, but i think that madelyn and caroline sounds better than madelyn and allison. madelyn and allison sounds a bit too matchy. (i'm assuming that caroline is pronounced ending in "line") i love the middle name grace :D
