[identity profile] the-good-ship.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I'm not particularly fond of place names as names (except maybe Florence), but as I am super-dooper bored, I felt like making a list of places, that I can remember having heard, people (including fictional people, of course) are actually called, or that I might have read someone on this group considering.

I would like to thank Wikipedia and www.thinkbabynames.com for all its help in my bout of procrastination.

Continents:
Asia (g)
Africa (g)
America (g)

Countries:
America (g)
Britain (b)
Chad (b)
China (g)
Cuba (b)
Georgia (g)
India (g)
Ireland (b)
Israel (b)
Jordan (b&g)
Kenya (g)
Libya (g)
Mali (b)

Ones I've not yet heard anyone calling their kids, but could totally envisage that someone, somewhere would:
Andorra
Argentina
Australia
Austria
Barbados
Cameroon
Cyprus
Egypt
Jamaica
Luxembourg
Malawi
Malaysia
Monaco
Morocco

I didn't bother listing countries that are named after saints (eg. San Marino, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, etc.) because they're names already, and I suppose that you wouldn't immediately recognised them as place names on their own.

Random states, provinces, counties, etc.:
Arizona (g)
Brittany (g)
Carolina (g)
Dakota (g)
Devon (b)
Georgia (g)
Holland (b)
Kent (b)
Louisiana (g)
Virginia (g)

Towns/cities:
Aberdeen (girl, oddly enough)
Adelaide (g)
Alexandria (g)
Austin (b)
Bradford (b)
Carlisle (girl, again odd)
Chelsea (g)
Chester (b)
Dallas (g&b)
Denver (b)
Florence (g)
Geneva (g)
Lancaster (b) (I think I've heard of someone called this, but don't quote me on it)
London (b&g)
Lourdes (g)
Mecca (g)
Paris (g&b)
Preston (b)
Siena (g)
Sydney (g&b)
Verona (g)
Vienna (g)
Warwick (b)

Feel free to add more, or comment on those I've listed.

I know a woman called Romanita. Roma = Rome and nita = derives from the French verb né which means 'being born'. Yes, she was born in Rome also. I love the name.

Um, Holland is a country too, not a county or province 8)

I like Florence & Geneva as names, and strangely enough I've always liked the sound of Lourdes. It's pretty =)
