lol this might be easier to sound out: Uh-nye-iss.

it's late, for the life of me i could NOT think of how to type out the nye/nigh sound LOL

don't mind all the comments. i just found this:

"ANAIS: Origin unknown, possibly a variatio of Ann. However you pronounce this name ("AH-na-ees," Ah-NAY-iss"), it's a beauty. And a lovely perfume as well. Namesake: Anais Nin."

"ANAÏS. An unusual, creative name that means "graceful" in Hebrew. It is largely associated with the colorful Paris-born American novelist and diarist Anaïs Nin, so choosing this name for your child will definitely brand you as a Nin devotee."

I think, in English, Anais would be pronounced the way it's mentioned above, but in French, it'd be 'Ah-nah-ee' =)

nope, it's got a dieresis on the 'i', so it's Uh-nuh-eess :)

I didn't know the dieresis was of any influence on the pronunciation...good to know! ;) I actually like it better pronounced that way =)

I've always pronounced Anais as I would the French port Calais (http://www.answers.com/topic/calais?cat=travel).

i've always pronounced anais as ah-nye-ees. i know a girl with that name.
but i don't care for it. willa is lovely, but the a at the end doesn't flow well with the a in anais. willa charlotte or willa violet is much nicer.
eva is okay, adeline is adorable, and it has the same flow problem with the double A's.
ivy charlotte is gorgeous.
carolina grace is a little more plain. probably because of the grace part.

I've never been too fond of Willa, but I think the rest of them are great!

When I see Anais, I think of that Jewel song: "you can be Henry Miller and I'll be Anais Nin....except this time we'll stay together in the end..."

She says "Uh-nye-us" :)

I like Violet Claire. It is very classy.

the name Anais comes up every now and then in this community, and I'm always amazed at how many people ask about the pronunciation.

Has no one heard of Anais Nin?

I knew a girl named Anais and for the longest time I thought her name was Anna East and people just leaving off the T.
