when you hear/read the named AUGUSTINE, do you first think of a male or a female?
what about the nickname auggie?
what do you think about the name augustine in general?

I think of a boy I went to school with Agustin. He was Mexican. Everyone called him Auggie.

All names ending in -ine are female, if they end in -in they're male.
It's a French grammar rule.
It makes pronounciation different, too. Augustine is O-gue-stee-ne and Augustin is O-gue-stenn (gue rhyming with cue)
In English I'd pronounce them August-een and August-en.

When I hear the name, I immediately think male name, though I've read that it's considered unisex now.

Auggie is cute in theory, but I think if I had heard it as a child, say, on a classmate, I would have thought, "Oggy? What the...?"

In general, when I think of the name, I think of St. Augustine. The city in Florida, not the man. Then I think about how I lived in Florida for nine years, but never went. I hear it's a nice town. So why didn't I go? Why?

Then I'd probably shake the baby for being named that.

Okay, scratch that last part.

i could see it on a girl, but i don't like it. it looks weird with the -ia ending for some reason. i prefer just augusta, because augustia sounds like aug-ust-ee-uh or aug-ust-ch'ya, both of which don't sound good to me.

I could see Augustine on a girl.

I know a guy named Auggie though, so I can only think male with that one.

I think it's female. That's probably because it was the last name of the old reading teacher at the middle school I went to. I'm not particularly found of the name, and I'm really not fun of Auggie as a nickname. Although, that could stem from being a Texas fan, and it very much resembling Aggie.

Definitely a male, like St. Augustine.

I see Augustine as a female name, Auggie as a male name. Possibly because of Augusten Burroughs' memoir, Dry, wherein he mentions being given the nickname Auggie.

Augusten to me sounds like a more masculine take on Augustine. And for what it's worth, I hate the name Augustine.

I think of a boy when I hear that name...and I am not too into such a name in the first place.

I think it's a guy's name. I think of the Roman "emperor"(he claimed he wasn't an emperor) Augustus (formerly Octavius) and the month August (also named after him). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus

I like the name on its own but wouldn't use it because of what I just said.

Its a lastname around here, so I automatically think lastname. Not a gender specific name for me, could go either way. I much like Augusten for a boy-- due to the authour Augusten Burroughs.

i think augustine could go either way. i always think of switchfoot's "something more (augustine's confession)"... great song :) it's a great name too. i'm not too wild about "auggie". if i was looking for an nn, i might shorten it to august, or maybe tina for a girl. i like it too much to shorten it though :)

I think of St. Augustine, so clearly, I think it is a male name.

But, personally, I think plain August sounds so much more masculine! And I prefer the nn Gus to Auggie. Auggie reminds me of a frog for some reason...

I would be shocked if I heard it on a girl (especially since St. Augustine is so famous!) The feminine name is Augusta, which I like.

I first think female, though it is a male's name. I like the nickname Auggie spelled Augie. I adore this name, and I would use it.

I don't know. Maybe. I would use a more masculine form of the name, like Augustus or Augusten, for a boy.

And I fell in love with Augie when I found the band Augie March :)
