Kicked up my heels tonight and watched The Little Mermaid and thought, Ariel. That's a neat name I never really considered.

What do you guys think of it, and Ariel or Arielle?
How would you pronounce it? AH-ree-el, AR-ee-el... etc.?

I like it Ariel. Definitely NOT pronounced the way Sebastian pronounces it. So, Air-ee-el.

If I have a daughter, I want to name her Ariel. But there is a chance she might have red hair...would that be totally horrible to do to her?

Nah, I don't think it'd be horrible. ^^

I love the name Ariel. I always thought it was pretty (esp. since I loved the Little Mermaid when I was younger).

I like it spelt Ariel and pronounced Air-ee-el

I always wanted to name a daughter that...but I have red hair and theres a chance my daughter may (every generation in my family has red heads) so I just could not do that to her lol

I'd pronounce it like the cartoon - I watched it WAYYYYYYY too many times as a kid (and it happens to be my son's favorite movie too, ... plus I'm Texan, so I couldn't imagine hearing / saying it any other way.)

That being said, I thought I'd mention that here in Georgia there is a guy that works at McDonald's whose name is Ariel. I know that was actually his name because my husband and he had built a small comradeship while he ordered our huge meal and the guy was all smiles and really happy, then my husband read the nametag and laughed like an asshole, and the guy got this really sad, defeated look on his face like he'd heard it a million times.

So sad, really - he looked close to crying.

I'm indifferent on the spelling, but I'd hate for it to be your son in a public service job with a nametag that says Ariel (Just in case you would ever have considered it for a boy, LOL)

PS. Tamsin is a name I've only heard once, and the girl was a complete badass. Just wanted to say. I had kindof thought her mom made the name up, this is only the second time I've seen it. That'd go on my list of cool unique names. ^^

Yeah! I have NO idea why people would have problems pronouncing that. O_o

It's actually a contraction of Thomasina IIRC. (Not that Thomasina is a name you hear much either. Pronouncing it can get a bit confusing when you know a Tamsin, a Tasmin and a Tasneem! (Yeah, I've been there.)

I liked the name too until I met this guy named Ariel. He went by Arie but he was a complete idiot who thought he knew everything. The name is kinda ruined for me now. He pronounced it like you would the letters R E L.

I didn't even realize it was a guys name as well until I met him. That would be my only concerns about using the name. :)

OMG there are TWO males named Ariel running around?

Somebody needs to stand guard in delivery rooms and be prepared to slap mommas.

I love the name Ariel. I'd love to use it as a middle name =) This is a recent development though, 'cause the name used to remind me of the little mermaid =P But now it reminds me of Sofia Vasillieva in Medium (crazy, I know) plus it's a Shakespearian name and it sounds nice, so yeah. I love it now.
Oh, I'd pronounced it Airiel.

OH YEAH!! I am a huge medium fan, bought both season 1 and 2, and I never once thought of the Little Mermaid when I heard Ariel.

I like both, but the spelling I prefer is Arielle with the ah-ree-ELL pronunciation.

Well, I know an Ariel and an Arielle (both female). Ariel was pronounced like The Little Mermaid. Arielle is pronounced like the letter R-E-L. Not coincidentally, Arielle's last name is also pronounced like two letters (for example Arby would be R-B).

Personally, I like the Arielle spelling and pronounciation better. And yes, I have heard that in certain countries Ariel is predominantly a male name. Again, I like it better for a girl... especially if it is spelled Arielle.
