The author of The Kite Runner, who is Afghani, is named Khaled Hosseini.

I like it, but I wouldn't use it.

Wait, how is Khaled 'Colin' but with a d sound? Am I missing something?

Depends on your pronunciation of Colin, I guess. The British version is way way off Khaled, d or no d. I can hear it in certain American accents if I think about it.

the actual arabic pronounciation is: khhh- aled. don't know how to describe it. it's a very, very old name, not kreativ (if you thought that, don't know if you did)...there was a 7th century islamic leader with that name, behindthename.com tells me! it means 'everlasting'/'eternal'.

I agree it is hard to describe the pronounciation - my best friend's husbands name is Khaled

I know what you guys mean. The English language doesn't have that sound, I believe.
Actually, the 'kh' sounds like 'j' in 'Juan'. You know, how Spanish people pronounce it.
