[identity profile] cat666.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm trying to decide on a name, I found out afew weeks ago that we are having a girl.
So, I've been thinking about names and I would like to pick a name that me and my Hubby both like. Well, I would really like to name her something that's an uncommon name,(Maybe even an old fashioned name.) but still something that people wouldn't think was odd.

So far I've thought of Ruby, and Isabel/Isabella. But my hubby doesn't like them, so I need ideas. Please Help! :)

I loved having the Lord of the Rings connection. I got into all the movies for free:) Plus being connected to Liv Tyler... wow what a beautiful actress and some people said i even looked like her! Plus it made feel smart that my parents got it from the books and i could test how many people read the trilogy before the movies came out! I want to have names from the book too... Rohan and Strider for boys, and i have a cousin named Eowyn!

It's a great name. It's strong but still feminine. And I've only met one person named Clara so it can't be too common.

Well, if uncommon is what you want, don't use Isabella. That was one the top ten most common names last year. I suggest people use this site (http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/) to get ideas. It lists up to 1000 names for each gender. If you want common start at #1 and work down. If you want uncommon start at #1000 and work up. Beware of names with multiple spellings though. Kaitlyn/Caitlin/Katelyn are all listed seperately. Together they'd be much higher on the list. You can also type in individual names to see how often they've been used the last 20 years or so.

I think Ruby is a nice name.

Old fashioned sounding names taken from my own list (http://www.livejournal.com/users/elemmennope/286257.html).
Adeline
Alice
Annabel
Audrey
Bianca
Cassandra
Clara

If you like Isabella maybe Arabella? I like the combo Arabella Catherine. Of course, I'm a bit biased, as my name is Katherine :)

I suggest this site
http://www.behindthename.com/top/
you can look for names that were popular back in the 1920s, the 1930s, etc. then type them in to see how popular they are today. you will be surprised, many names (like Isabella) that seem uncommon are actually very popular. It should also give you an idea of how the name is climbing in popularity. I love the name Ruby, but it's jumping up the list, so in 5 years might be a top 10 name.

Heh, just read through the comments and realized that a lot of these were already suggested. I'm surprised that Arabella was brought up...most people haven't heard of it.
