Honestly I'm quite glad that they (the N.Z. government) stopped that name from being given. Can you imagine the ridicule that poor child would go through? *shudders*

4real?

Would you ever try to name your child something with a numeral in front?

Does the United States have something like that, the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages?

I think we do. It seems like it was one of the databases I had easy access to when I had an Ancestry.com account.

That's foul.

Does the U.S have any naming laws? I've always wondered, given the ridiculous names American celebrities have given their children.

I remember reading about it somewhere, and I'm wanting to say we do but they are very, very lenient because people protest the freedom acts.

I believe that you can name your child anything you want. I do know that legally you must give your child a last name. A former friend of mine and her boyfriend had legally changed their names to single names (like Madonna or Prince). They wanted to name their baby the same way - just one name. When they found out that the baby had to be given a last name they decided they would chose a random string of numbers for the last name. I believe they settled on giving the baby no first name, just a last name and they call him that. The name...is Quiet.

(FYI I think this is really cruel to the baby...)

That baby isn't even going to learn to obey the command "Be quiet", because it's like... "Well I am, that's my name!"

I know that my great grandmother worked in a doctor's office and they had a patient named T9C. The woman pronounced it really fast so it sounded more like a name and not like saying individual letters, so my great grandmother kept trying to spell it Teenincy. So, I know there weren't stiff regulations in the US when she was named.

As far as using numerals in names, why not just spell it Foreal or something? It's a terrible name either way, but at least there's no numbers to cause problems for the parents and the child down the road.

Stupid.. because it's not like they're even banning the name, they're just banning numerals, which makes sense to me. There has to be a line drawn somewhere about which symbols can be part of an official name.

So they can still call him that if they want! Forreal, For Real, For-real, etc, all would be legal names apparently.
