[identity profile] babyjess8.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
inspired by an earlier post, i'd like to bring up the *horrible, horrible* fad of parents naming their kids after tv/movie characters! Every few years a character will *inspire* a generation of names.

A few that i recall without too much thought:

Gilmore girls - Lorelai, Rory
Dawson's creek - dawson, pacey
Casper (the movie) - casper
Bewitched - tabitha

Can you think of any others?

What is your opinion?

(I'm trying to stir up a lively debate!)

I know some people just like Lorelai, Rory, Casper, and Tabitha and don't associate them with the shows. Dawson and Pacey, I think, clearly originated or were popularized because of Dawson's Creek.

*is embarrassed* I think Pacey is kind of a cute name/nickname.

Yeah I'm also like, what's up with Lorelai? It's supposed to be Lorelei, isn't it?? Plus Rory is just awful and unpronounceable.
Casper is ridiculuous, but Tabitha I like quite a lot.

I was born in 1983 and was really close to being a Meggie (Megan) after the Meggie in "The Thorn Birds", that my parents were really caught up with at the time.

I actually wanted a daughter named Josephine so I could call her Joey like the girl in Dawson's Creek. And then I wanted a daughter named Charlotte so I could call her Charley (Just because I like the name). We're going to be using the name Tabitha. And no, not because of Bewitched. But because we like the name. :)

How about Charlie's Angels? There's Sabrina, Jill and Kelly. And later there was Julie, Kris and Tiffany (my sisters name). Of course there's Kate, Farrah, Jaclyn, Cheryl, Shelley and Tanya.

Beverly Hills, 90210 spawned a naming frenzy for names like Brenda, Brandon, Dylan, Kelly...

My cousin liked the name Joey for either a boy or a girl after the baby's father who goes by JJ but who's first name is Joseph... So when a little girl popped out they just named her Joey... People are always asking what it's short for and I think they get tired of saying nothing... They call her JoJo for short now...

Don't forget Rachel on Friends naming her baby Emma and the millions of Emmas that followed...

I'm sure that would have contributed but I reckon Emma has been popular way longer than friends even.

Yep, my name geek friends and I were disappointed she chose something so ordinary, so to speak. (We love watching crazy and weird names take off because of TV.)

No, be mad at Monica!
Monica was the one who suggested she name her daughter Emma.

oh Addison. You have no idea how many kids under the age of 1 I know named Addison. I'm only 21 and none of my friends have kids...but friends of friends and such.

...in the past year I know of AT LEAST 5 Addisons being born. In fact, I have only other heard of one person I know naming her daughter something other than Addison (they named her Sarah)

The whole Lorelei/Rory thing..I never got that. I was always such a HUGE fan of Gilmore girls and never knew how Rory came from Lorelei. I love the name Rory (hence bringing it up in the previous post) and just wanted to hear what everyone else thought...but I do think it is a boys name

As for Dawson and Pacey. Can't say I have met anyone with those names but then again...I was relatively young when Dawsons Creek was on and knew very few babies born in that time. I do think Pacey is cute though.
I also think Joey is a really cute name of a girl esp. if it is a nickname....but I would have though that without Dawsons Creek.

so basically...i am not a fan of naming your kid after a tv show. I don't like anything too popular because I feel like if I named my kid something like that (ex. if I just had a girl named Addison)...then she would go to school and there would be several other Addisons in her class.
When i was in school there were 5 Christina's in my class (out of 18 girls). Hearing my teachers trying to differentiate the Christina's got so confusing.

I actually really like the name Rory, it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

Thank god the name "Buffy" never became popular in the aftermath of the show. Ug, can you imagine?

To some extent I think that people don't necessarly name their children after the characters, but get the idea of the name from the show. Especially for unique names like Dawson and Addison.

I know that my mom got the idea for my name from the name of a little girl in the doctor's office she worked at, but I wasn't named after her.

I was born in '86 and my name was "inspired" by a character on Family Times.

Yes, my parents really did name me Mallory.

I like the name Casper. It was my favorite movie as a kid. I wouldn't say I'd use the name because of the movie but because I like the name.

Some friends of mine named their daughter Aurora and call her Rory for short...nothing to do with GG, though. Now their son is named Luke after Luke Skywalker:)

I've never heard of the name Trinity until The Matrix came out. Now I see a lot of kids named that and I see it quite often on people's baby names lists.

There's nothing wrong with naming your kid after a tv/movie character. Do you think it's "horrible" to name them after book characters? It's literature, just the same.

HOWEVER, I think it should only be done for a character that really means something to you, and for a name that's not too trendy (such as Addison).

I have never, ever watched the Gilmore Girls. Is "Lorelai" like "Lorelei"? I always liked the name Lorelei since I read "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".
