I would avoid using a name if it became too popular. My favourite name is Henry, and that's starting to up itself on the charts; unfortunately, if it becomes the next Aidan (however, not as dated as Aidan will be) I will probably not use it.
And if someone whose opinion I really cared about told me they hated the name, like a best friend or parent, I'd probably reconsider it. I had this conversation with my friend today actually.
The only names I have ever been deterred from considering because of popularity are Emma and Olivia. I usually don't like popular names.
If someone doesn't like my names, that's usually fine with me, because for the most part I think the American public has a tendency to name children the stupidest things. The only time I've ever changed a name because of something someone said was when I was considering the name "William" and then found out that it would be too painful for my mother and father in law to have a grandchild named that. (They had a friend who died).
For the first, it depends really. A name i dearly love is Olivia, but of course every girl and her mother is named that these days. HOWEVER it's a good 10 years before i am likely to start producing children so the "trendy" names could change. Or perhaps my taste might change. I wouldn't really like a child of mine to be one of 6 in his or her year i suppose, but then my favourite boys name happens to be Michael, and thats been up the top there for decades. I don't think i could ship that off my list entirely. In my year at school there is half a dozen each of Sarahs, Michaels, Mathews, James', Joshuas....That can't be fun.
As for the second, i'd like to say no, one persons opinion wouldn'y sway me from a name i love, but if you receive 100% negative feedback...well you'd wanna hope your kid isn't going to receive that kind of response.
I would if the name was "trendy" but not if it became popular. Well, depends how intense my love for the name is and also how popular. If suddenly all my favourites were extremely popular I'd still end up using one of them most likely. But if say my top name skyrocketed to the number one spot, I would choose another that I liked.
As for 2... I wouldn't care if it was just anyone. If it was my husband of course I wouldn't use the name. And I have a strong suspicion that if it was my mum I would get put off the name too, although I don't like to admit it.
