Keegan Kade Smith
I have become very attached to this name for a huge myriad of reasons, but wanted to ask opinions.
What do you guys think on the spelling variations: Keegan vs. Kegan
My feelings were that the spelling "Kegan" might be a bad idea for a number of reasons - Maybe his teacher won't know how to pronounce it, maybe when he tells someone his name they'll spell it with two e's out of instinct? Growing up with a name like Katy - I've finally come to the conclusion that even more than it bothers me to have to spell out my name every time I give it out, it bothers me when they ASSUME they know how to spell it and I have to correct them later.
Is Keegan / Kegan a fairly popular name? I hadn't heard it beforehand, but I'm from Texas and we're all pretty much Jessicas, Joshes, Katies, and Jeremys.
If you were a schoolteacher on the first day of school and were going down the roll, would you be able to pronounce his name? Would you flinch at it?
Now imagine you're a doctor's secretary and someone calls to schedule an appointment for Keegan. How would you go to spell it?
Anyway, thanks for bearing with my silly little post. I can't guarantee I'll really listen to any advice I've gotten here, but before I go off and name my second son for life I feel I owe it to him to try to listen to a bit of hard truth whether I get my feelings hurt or not. ^.-

Date: 2007-06-21 11:54 am (UTC)To the original poster - I don't have a preference between Keegan, Keagan or Kegan but I think the first two are both more common than Kegan. If you're concerned, maybe look up the popularity of the spellings and pick the most common.

Date: 2007-06-20 09:03 pm (UTC)I'm not really sure I'd let whether or not it's "trendy" be a factor in deciding a name. I mean, as long as it doesn't get him made fun of, and we like it, and everyone's not named Keegan where WE are (which I still don't think is that big of a deal) I don't see what the problem is.

Date: 2007-06-20 11:10 pm (UTC)Traditional names dont get used much cause people are going for 'different' names. I named my son Vincent because I didnt think there would be many Vincents in his class in 10 years. I was a Meaghan, so I always was Meaghan W. I hated it.

Date: 2007-06-21 12:56 pm (UTC)When I hit my first day of Kindergarten, I was one of 9 Katies
(well, 7 Katies and 2 Katys). It sucked until they started with the initials, and since my middle name was already Kay, it sortof fit well for them to call me Katy Kay instead of Katy G. or whatever, so that worked out for me. I think it'd be kindof cool if they resorted to calling him Keegan Kade, but Keegan K. would sound a bit weird.
Very good point there though, I hadn't really thought about it too much because I like trying to make their middle names as much a name as their first (my other son is Seth Alex, we call him by both names more than just "Seth").
I think it's definately worth looking into now though, thanks!

Date: 2007-06-20 09:21 pm (UTC)What in the world is up with that? LOL.
And thank you. If it does skyrocket in popularity in the short 3 months it'll take me to have this baby, I don't think he'll cry too much about it anyway. I have a zillion best friends that all had the misfortune of being named Josh and it never bothered them growing up. Actually, they're friends with each other too, and get a kick when we're like "Hey, so you want to hang out with the Joshes today or what?" Or "What's Jake squared up to?"

Date: 2007-06-20 09:21 pm (UTC)I think people tend to say "This name's not trendy where I live!" because really, how many 1 year olds do most people formally meet? Even if your occupation means you know the names of more than the general population (say, daycare worker), think about how many MORE adults you're interacting with and have met over the course of your life, thus making it FEEL like in comparison the trendy name in question isn't THAT popular.
But then when those babies all grow up, they WILL be the adult names to which the next generation's trends are getting compared.

Date: 2007-06-21 11:58 am (UTC)Definitely agree that people name their kids based on what adults their own age are called and don't think to check what other babies are called.

Date: 2007-06-20 10:13 pm (UTC)i've never heard of anyone naming their kid keegan in my area, and i don't see it becoming as common as joshua or katie.
if you love the name then go for it!
i like the combination of names you have picked out, by the way:)

Date: 2007-06-21 02:02 am (UTC)If someone, for example, came into the starbucks where I work and said their name was Keegan, I would spell it Keegan. But I usually ask how they spell it; they tip better when you do.

Date: 2007-06-21 09:54 pm (UTC)Though when someone says their name is Katelyn, I will spelled it Caitlin, because that's how I like it.

Date: 2007-06-21 01:01 pm (UTC)I like the Keagan too, probably the best - but have a feeling more people would butcher that spelling than the others. :/
