Keegan Kade Smith

I have become very attached to this name for a huge myriad of reasons, but wanted to ask opinions.

What do you guys think on the spelling variations: Keegan vs. Kegan

My feelings were that the spelling "Kegan" might be a bad idea for a number of reasons - Maybe his teacher won't know how to pronounce it, maybe when he tells someone his name they'll spell it with two e's out of instinct? Growing up with a name like Katy - I've finally come to the conclusion that even more than it bothers me to have to spell out my name every time I give it out, it bothers me when they ASSUME they know how to spell it and I have to correct them later.

Is Keegan / Kegan a fairly popular name? I hadn't heard it beforehand, but I'm from Texas and we're all pretty much Jessicas, Joshes, Katies, and Jeremys.

If you were a schoolteacher on the first day of school and were going down the roll, would you be able to pronounce his name? Would you flinch at it?

Now imagine you're a doctor's secretary and someone calls to schedule an appointment for Keegan. How would you go to spell it?

Anyway, thanks for bearing with my silly little post. I can't guarantee I'll really listen to any advice I've gotten here, but before I go off and name my second son for life I feel I owe it to him to try to listen to a bit of hard truth whether I get my feelings hurt or not. ^.-

I know 1 boy with the same name and its spelled Keagan. I personally like Keegan better. Im an education major so the whole spelling thing is big to me. Kegan doesn't have the long E sound so the teacher MIGHT pronounce it Keg-an. Double Es give the long E (aka the vowel says its name)

Sorry if I confused you!

Actually, I'm not sure I agree.. Kegan to me could still have the long vowel, if it was Keggan it would definitely be short. Perhaps that is a regional thing though (I'm from Australia)

To the original poster - I don't have a preference between Keegan, Keagan or Kegan but I think the first two are both more common than Kegan. If you're concerned, maybe look up the popularity of the spellings and pick the most common.

Keegan is nice and simple. Kegan makes me think Kay-gan.

I read it as Kay-gan too, which makes me think of Kegel (spelling?) muscles =X

I'd pronounce Keegan correctly, but I'd spell it Kegan if someone was reciting it to me (like as a secretary). I'm more familiar with the Kegan spelling.

And I do rather like the name.

Very trendy. I've met like four babies named Keegan in the last 6 months.

No no, its not a problem. You can name your son whatever you want, spelling it whatever way you want. I just wanted to let you know that I've seen a lot of babies with that name, meaning it'll be popular when your son gets older.
Traditional names dont get used much cause people are going for 'different' names. I named my son Vincent because I didnt think there would be many Vincents in his class in 10 years. I was a Meaghan, so I always was Meaghan W. I hated it.

I think Keegan works best, too. I'd have problems pronouncing Kegan correctly on my first go. I like the name. =)

I've never actually known anyone named Keegan (or any variation), but I've gotten the impression that it is become somewhat popular. I think Keegan would be the least-confusing spelling; teachers might mispronounce Kegan. If I heard the name spoken aloud, I would assume it's spelled Keegan. As far as flinching or not, I wouldn't exactly do that, but I don't especially like the name, either.

I've only known one Keegan (he'd be around 23 now, I think); if it is trendy, at least I don't think it's hit the name lists so far. I don't think it should deter you yet--it's not at Aidan-status yet!

And I like the name very much. It's one of my favorites.

I'd spell it Keegan. It is a bit trendy — not over-the-top trendy (yet?), but still...

I think people tend to say "This name's not trendy where I live!" because really, how many 1 year olds do most people formally meet? Even if your occupation means you know the names of more than the general population (say, daycare worker), think about how many MORE adults you're interacting with and have met over the course of your life, thus making it FEEL like in comparison the trendy name in question isn't THAT popular.

But then when those babies all grow up, they WILL be the adult names to which the next generation's trends are getting compared.

I agree with you on all of that except for the bit about people who work with babies/kids. I reckon people working with children and babies really do get a good idea of what the trends are.

Definitely agree that people name their kids based on what adults their own age are called and don't think to check what other babies are called.

No matter what, there will always be someone who failed phonetics and will mispronounce your sons name. If you want to avoid that as much as possible, I'd go with Keegan, though I prefer it spelled Kegan.

i prefer to spell it Kegan because the double "e"s just don't look right to me. i'd pronounce them the same way though (as Keegan).

i like it spelled like "keagan" the best.
i've never heard of anyone naming their kid keegan in my area, and i don't see it becoming as common as joshua or katie.
if you love the name then go for it!
i like the combination of names you have picked out, by the way:)

I like the name Keegan. I like it Keagan or Keegan, best.

If someone, for example, came into the starbucks where I work and said their name was Keegan, I would spell it Keegan. But I usually ask how they spell it; they tip better when you do.

I usually spell it Katy, because that's how I prefer it.

Though when someone says their name is Katelyn, I will spelled it Caitlin, because that's how I like it.

=]

p.s. starbucks totally rocks.

I have a male friend called "Keagan", know of a boy with the name spelt "Keeghan", and know of a girl spelt "Keegan". I prefer the spelling Keagan, it just looks nicer to me than the double or single 'e'
